How do I replace battery
Hi,
From what I can determine, the battery cables are part of an engine sub harness. Cost of the part is in the $300 range. However, I suspect your real problem is the connectors on the cables which attach to the battery. They should be cleaned very well, free of all signs of corrosion and tightened securely. There is a common problem of the terminals corroding and cracking / breaking. They can be replaced easily and cheaply by cutting off the old terminal(s) , stripping back (or leaving exposed) about a 1/2" of wire. If wire has any corrosion, sand down to remove corrosion. The replacement terminals should be the clamp on type that you insert the wire into the clamp connection on back of new terminal and tighten it down securing the wires to the new terminal, then attaching them back to the battery. Cost around $10, buy some anti-corrosion spray for batteries also and spray them well after installation to battery to prevent this from happening again.
NOTE: Negative or black (if color coded) should come off first. Then remove positive (red) cable. Remove both cables from battery before performing repairs. Positive (red) cable goes back on first, negative cable (black) goes on last. This will prevent you from damaging your computer system and eliminate the chance of arcing (sparking) while effecting repairs.
Hope that helps!....Mike

Steve, first, you need to identify if it's a problem with a cylinder firing. Take all the plug wires loose at the plugs to where you can lift them up high enough to kill the cylinder. You may have one weak hole. Make sure the EGR is not stuck partially open, it will cause high HC levels. Ford doesn't provide a stand alone test procedure for testing their coils. If you have a digital volt ohm meter, you can do a comparison on each one, high tower to ground, ohms test. You could have a crank position sensor failing. My mine did on my 7.3 liter diesel with the same symptoms. Cam sensors are also a source of a problem. Well, you have a starting point.

Hello, This sounds like a cracked or shorted coil. Some of the autoparts stores can check this for you. You can get free scans at Autozone, Advance , or Oreillys. If you have a Vacuum gauge, it will tell you if the Valve springs are floating at higher RPMs.
You can try to water mist the Intake manifold with an old spray detergent bottle. If the RPM changes while the engine is running, you have found a leak which is throwing off all the engine settings.
There were a lot of reports of gas tank leaks and cracking by the fuel tank and fuel pump for this year of Escort. Whether you have this problem may take a Radiator shop to test it. The Emissions hoses could be venting vacuum thru any leaks in the gas tank.
Some of the problems should give you a "Check light", but you should have a free scan to see if your onboard Diagnostic system is even working.
The fuel cutout light comes on, and the car wont
i had the same problem, it turned out that the float in my gas tank was so old that my gas gauge on the dash was inaccurate. so it only happened wen it was less than a quarter tank of gas on the gauge but really i was out of gas and the gauge was wrong

If it is not turning the check engine light on it won't be a sensor causing it.
So you need to go back to basics,Have you replaced the fuel filter lately?
it also sounds like some moisture in the fuel system, beyond that check plugs and coil.
