I had the same problem with my maxima and the alarm I replaced my starter and haven't had any problems with it yet and my alarm is back and up running as we'll so I would start with your starter.... I took mine to the auto parts store tested great because it decided not to act up at the time....but dead again all the sudden.... took starter out it was shot and put in the new one fires up everytime now alarm works great hope this helps

Do a search on YouTube of "replace knock sensor nissan pathfinder" and look for the video by Dan Russell. It makes a hard job really easy, and it may apply to your situation.

You are describing a couple different issues, First off you should never see smoke come from your ignition. You say you replaced it but if you did and this was after it "smoked" then you may have had more damage than just the ignition. The click you are hearing sounds like the starter trying to engage, but the armature is stuck. Try a light couple of taps with a hammer directly on the starter. If the car starts... then you need to replace the starter. Keep in mind you may have to have someone hold the key in the "start" position while you tap it. Make sure the emergency brake is on and the wheels are chaulked.

go to local Autozone or similiar parts seller... they will check it for free and give you a printout of what's needed... probably just an O2 sensor on the 98 nissan, but I would replace catalytic converter if near 200k miles for GP.

That is your BatteryIf you are attempting to charge your Battery IN the car with an External Charger, then you may have Corrosion on your Terminals.. Clean them and attempt to charge again.If you are Trying to Charge the Battery with Running the Car, Test the Battery Voltage...
