EGR Flow and Knock sensor 1

I have a 1996 Nissan Maxima and been having some problems for awhile.
Usually ill start the car and go for a drive..just regular, clean driving. And out of nowhere the car's rpm will jump and so will the car and then it dies..while im driving.
I attached the computer to it and it read that i have two problems.
EGR Flow Malfunction
Knock Sensor 1 Limit Malfunction
I'd appreciate if you tell me what these are, where they are located, and what to do???
Thanks,
George

Hi

The EGR valve allows a percentage of exhaust gas back into the engine during part throttle driving conditions. The exhaust gas enters the combustion process and cools the charge down slightly which lowers the emissions.

The EGR flow malfunction is usually rectified by removing the EGR valve and cleaning out the valve itself and the port(s) on the intake where it was sat, which have probably become narrowed due to all the deposits. You need to use a piece of wire to get right into the ports and clean them right out. The valve is connected to both the intake manifold and the exhaust, it is round and will have a vacuum pipe to it. It will either be mounted directly on the intake manifold, or linked to it via a hose, probably metal, and it will be linked to the exhaust via a hose, probably metal.

The knock sensor listens for engine knock, usually caused by incomplete combustion or over advanced ignition timing, and retards the ignition timing to counteract the knock.

You very highly likely have a faulty sensor, but check the wiring first. To suss the problem properly you would need to have alive scan carried out.

Knock sensors are usually located under the intake manifold on these cars and are a complete pain to get to. You'll probably need a universal joint type of affair to get it off. They held on with one bolt.

Very best regards

Geordie

The best way is to use a scan tool to clear the codes, that will turn off the light, also disconnecting the battery over night may work, but no completely sure about that, it varies from year to year.

how do I change the spark plugs of my 1996 nissan maxima

Using an Allen/Hex key tool, remove the cover to gain access to spark plug holes. This engine has coils at each plug, so after unplugging the electrical connection, you can use either a Phillips screwdriver or an 8mm socket on an extension to remove the 2 screws securing each coil. Pull out the coil and then use a 5/8" spark plug socket on a 6" extension to remove each spark plug. Gap the new plugs to .040" and apply anti-seize lubricant to the threads. Install each plug, slowly at first, so as not to cross-thread it. Torque the plugs to 18 lb/ft. Apply some dielectric grease to the inside of the spark plug boots and re-install the coils. Plug them all back in and re-install the covers. You're done!

dfifrank: The relay you are seeking is locate on the driver's side of the car. The left kick panel or panel forward of the left front door pillar. There is a large box which is the ABS control unit.
There are two smaller relays with it. The relay mounted which is closest to the rear of the car is the fuel pump relay.
The relays in the fuse panel are as follows: the one to the extreme left which is located half way up the box is the ignition relay.
The one at the top right is the accessory relay and the one at the bottom right is the blower relay.
You have a pair of audio amp relay's located in the right lower kick panel and a flasher unit sometimes referred to as a relay, located further up closer to the firewall on the right kick panel.
I believe this should answer your questions and then some.
I service a lot of Maxima's consequently they are somewhat familiar to me.

A Bad Knock Sensor will not cause a misfire, unless the advance is off due to a faulty Knock Sensor. The O2 Sensor will cause a random misfire.

Good luck on this repair.
