Okay. I have a 2001 6.0 Silverado 3500. When I turn the key all lights P R N D 1 2 work, after I start it up they go out. I have replaced the IP instrument cluster Anyone know?

When you turn the key on, a light test is performed which is why they go on then - shows there is nothing wrong with the lights. The lights are controlled by a switch either on the steering column or in the console (stick shift). Looks like the switch will need to be replaced.

No overdrive

It really has to have a scanner on it to tell. But here are some things you can try. The OD button is in the off position. Try cycling it as you drive. The light could be bad and you don't know it's off. put the shifter in first gear position, up shift manually. Does it go from first to second? Second to third? You could have lost a gear. Usually first. Usual sign for this is no power take off/sluggish. All of these would throw a code. Some wont turn the check engine light on. Again a scanner is needed. Basically the toque converter clutch solenoid is not engaging..Could be internal problems... Dirty and/or the solenoid is bad.

Try heavier oil or perhaps some additive. Sounds like the motor is getting tired.

No steering no brakes/brakes are hard as a rock so is turning the wheel.

Replace Power Steering Pump, seals are blown. As for your brakes, lines need to be bled and adjusted. When bleeding power brakes DO NOT Bleed While Engine Is Running! Doing so will result more problems. Suggest it be done by a certified mechanic at a brake shop such as Pep Boys or even Midas. If brakes are still hard then it may very well be your hydraulic pump ( big circular object connected to the brake master cylinder on the fire wall ) is no longer functioning and must be replaced (rarely happens but....)

I lost spark on my 2001 chevy 3500 with the vortec 8.1 motor. what can i try?

Go to Autozone.com and get a free wiring diagram by registering your truck. They also provide fusebox layouts. Some GM units use Relays for the Ignition. You should be able to trace the power from the Ignition switch, through the Relay and out to the ECM. Then it is a matter of finding out where the power dies. Now it takes a pulse to fire the spark and you should have a crankshaft sensor. Check your connections there. Please rate my info.

On a 2001 Chevy 3500

Thicker oil will not cure this. Try the oil recomended when new which is 5w 30 and an AC Delco oil filter. There is a difference in filters and can create this issue is inferior filters are used. Certain manufacturers actually have Technical Service Bullentins regarding this. It needs thinner when starting. Thicker oil will only remain thin when warm. If carbon is an issue then a good chemical flush and 2 oil changes may help. SeaFoam is highly recomended and productive. Knock, cam and crank sensors will not cause these issues. How does it run otherwise? Here are the values though;

Knock sensor
Testing

  1. Connect a digital multimeter to the KS signal circuit and to the KS low reference circuit at the KS.
  2. Set the multimeter to the 400 mv AC hertz scale and wait for the display to stabilize at 0 Hz.
  3. Tap on the engine block with a non-metallic object near the KS while observing the signal indicated on the multimeter.
NOTE Do not tap on plastic engine components.
  4. The multimeter should display a fluctuating frequency while tapping on the engine block. If not, replace the sensor.

Ignition switch does not "spring-back" into run

It sounds like your tension spring in the ignition has broke or unhooked. That is something that many local locksmiths have the parts and tools to fix. And it would be a lot less expensive than having a new ignition switch installed.
It is highly unlikely that the current condition of your ignition will cause damage to other parts, so I would not consider this issue as being urgent.

I hope this helps you.

Started my truck this morning. there was no power

Your fluids are low or your belts are slipping or it is so cold, nothing is flowing properly. Did it get better as you drove? If not, remember, stopping is much more important than going and steering is also very important. I suggest you ask your mechanic to take a look at your Silverado. This is a big truck and you must maintain control of it.

It could be something else ... I am not a Chevrolet mechanic ...

Thanks for your visit today.
