WON'T START
Hi there
Yes could be but also try getting a compression test on the cylinders as it could be a problem with engine lacking comp when hot so then wont get fuel and air mix correctly.

Transmission not ingaging
Don't remember if this has a cable, get on a lift and with engine off see if the shift lever moves when going thru the P.R.N.D. If it does check if the pump is working on trans. Quick check remove one of the cooler lines and start the engine WATCH OUT IT COULD GET MESSY.

Why would 2001 Escape fails to start?
Inertia sensor could be tripped cutting off power to the fuel pump. That is if the engine is cranking. Reset button is behind one of the front floor kick panels.
If engine does not crank, check Brake lights. If the lights are out, then a safety switch on the brake pedal lever is loose or broken.

Ballast resistor
If you are talking about the blower motor resistor you can usually find it by looking at the blower motor and back tracing the wires. The resistor is usually mounted in the Firewall area, in the underhood ducts, and has a single electric plug-in. Usually 2 bolts hold the part to the duct. Check the Web for photos of your part.
