I would say to test this with a test meter rather than relying on your cars gauge. The reason for this is that the alternator has its own regulator. I am not familiar if your car has resistance wiring for the wires that go to your dash gauge. My 2002 Mercury LSE has a gauge package that has Analog displays; do not know if your vehicle has Analog gauges. You may have a bad battery, because the lower the battery is, the higher the output of the Alternator. If the wire that triggers the feedback from your battery is not making a connection, the regulator may decide the battery needs perpetual charging or the resistance in the feedback may be contrary to what the factory wiring should be due to someone changing out a resistor wire.
