I have a 1983 Ford ranger with a 2.3 4 cylinder,

Hello, If this is a push rod engine I had an identical problem with an engine in my 1988-1989 Jeep Wagoneer. It was a Buick V-8 and behaved exactly like your Ford engine. On my engine it was weak valve springs. You could take your thumb and push on the valve spring while the engine idled and the engine would miss out. Turn it off and start it up and it would idle smoothly, rev it up and let off the gas and it would miss out and shake. You could also have hydraulic lifters (check your model) and they could behave like this. At idle the lifters would pump up, but the lifters may not refill fast enough to work the valves smoothly. If you have hydraulic lifters they must be centered in their travel to pump correctly. Even if you have solid lifters the valve adjustment can affect engine performance.

I am not a diesel mechanic, a tractor mechanic, or a shade tree mechanic. But, it sounds to me like it is time for a new clutch pack. Anyone with reasonable knowledge of simple mechanics can do this job at a much cheaper price than a professional diesel or tractor mechanic, but it can be a heavy duty job. I would weigh the differences in downtime of my equipment and the ability of my shade tree mechanic.

I have a 1983 Ford Ranger, When I try to start it all the light and radio work, but it wont turn over at all their isn't even a click. I have replaced the the key switch, starter solenoid, starter.

As simple as it sounds, make sure the transmission is in PARK. Also, there might be a fuse that goes to the starter. Might even be a loose ground/hot wire from the primary electrical system.

Where do the four wirers go on the fuel pump inside tank

Two run the pump, two go to the gauge sender unit. If you have removed them to replace the pump, re-install as they were, or better yet, follow the instructions which came with the new pump.

1983 ford ranger fuel pump removal install

Unless I'm mistaken (that never happens, lol) you must remove the gas tank to access the internal fuel pump. Drain most fuel first, and be VERY CAREFUL with any lights, flames, heaters. Use only battery powered light to be safer. A mostly empty tank is full of fumes and will explode if ignited, but a full tank is very heavy and difficult to handle. If you can drop the tank out, the hard part is done.

Hello,my 1983 ford ranger doesn't start it does smell like gas when im cranking it over .ive had rebilut carb, cap rotor ,has good spark on new plugs ,new fuel pump, new filter and carb is getting gas.i

That solenoid is the electric choke and it will flood the truck out if it's not working properly, have you tried to hold the butterfly opened while cranking it, if it starts then, you can unplug the connector to the choke and run it, it just might be hard to start when it's cold.

1983 ranger turn signal lights flash quickly on both sides. Hazard lights work. Steering wheel felt locked and heard a breaking sound that seemed to come from the steering column.

fast flashing usually means a bulb is burnt... have you checked them all ??? or did you wire in a trailer plug and did something wrong ???

I change the distribuator cap, rotor, and spark plug wires on my 1983 ford ranger 2.3 engine now when its warm the engine runs wide open can you tell me why it does that?

you may have a leak in the intake manifold which is acting like the throttle being open-look for a crack or loose bolts on the manifold to the head- cheers Denny
