My dad's 1986 Ford F250 pickup, 460 CI won't start, no lights,

Hi, my dad has a 1986 Ford F250 pickup, 460 CI. He started it after sitting for over a year. It ran for a few minutes, then stopped. He found a fusible link that was falling apart and replaced it. It still won't start unless he jumps the starter relay from the hot battery terminal. Now he has no power to anything, but he doesn't know when this happened. His owners manual shows a fusible link for the ignition, but not the location. I'm thinking this also may have been damaged, along with other fuses, hence no power to anything. But without a diagram, it is difficult to check this out. I haven't seen the truck yet myself, but I would like at least know the location of the ignition fusible link and if there are any other leads that may have shorted out that would stop all power. Any other thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

It could only be a couple of things. First check the wires to the starter solenoid. There will be a positive cable from the battery to the relay. Then you will have two more wires that go to two terminals. Jump between the positive terminal and the starter terminal. It should crank over. Sounds like you already did this step. If it does not crank check your battery. If the battery is good and you have power to the relay then I would suspect the starter bendix is probably to blame. You can replace the bendix on the starter. If you still have no power you will need to start at the ignition switch. Hope this helps. Also the gas in the vehicles tank could be bad and causing it to not continue running. Sitting for a year with a fuel tank not full will allow condensation to occur in the fuel tank. Last but not least most fusible links are attached at the starter relay because this is where the main power distribution occures to the vehicles other systems

V8 timing marks

With the Dura Spark II system, only an initial timing adjustment is possible. Ignition timing is not considered to be a part of tune-up or routine maintenance.
With the TFI-IV system no ignition timing adjustment is possible and none should be attempted.

  1. Locate the timing marks on the crankshaft pulley and the front of the engine.
  2. Clean the timing marks so that you can see them.
  3. Mark the timing marks with a piece of chalk or with paint. Color the mark on the scale that will indicate the correct timing when it is aligned with the mark on the pulley or the pointer. It is also helpful to mark the notch in the pulley or the tip of the pointer with a small dab of color.
  4. Attach a tachometer to the engine.
  5. Attach a timing light according to the manufacturer's instructions. If the timing light has three wires, one is attached to the No. 1 spark plug with an adapter. The other wires are connected to the battery. The red wire goes to the positive side of the battery and the black wire is connected to the negative terminal of the battery.
  6. Disconnect the vacuum line to the distributor at the distributor and plug the vacuum line. A golf tee does a fine job.
  7. Check to make sure that all of the wires clear the fan and then start the engine.
  8. Adjust the idle to the correct setting.
  9. Aim the timing light at the timing marks. if the marks that you put on the flywheel or pulley and the engine are aligned with the light flashes, the timing is correct. Turn off the engine and remove the tachometer and the timing light. If the mark are not in alignment, replace the ignition module.

You'll need to remove radiator, shrould, belts, distributor (make sure you mark the position of the distributor and rotor after you line up the crankshaft pulley with the TDC mark on the timing cover), water pump, the harmonic balancer, (you'll a harmonic balancer puller). fuel pump, if mounted on the timing cover. Remove the first 3 or 4 of the oil pan bolts, remove the timing cover. It may help to place a screwdriver in between the the oil pan and engine, to lower the pan slightly to get the cover off. Remove the timing chain and gears, and reinstall, Replace the from seal. Make sure to use some silicone sealer at the block/pan/cover mating surface.

Thanks for choosing FIxYa and welcome to the site. They are usually on the same side as the gas cap. You can always easily find it by going to your gas cap and following the gas lines under the car. Start where you put fuel in it. You will see the gas lines under the vehicle. Follow the ones that lead to the front. You should run right into your fuel filter.
