Do you mean that you have power and when you try to crank engine over there is a click and it doesn't crank and you loose power? If so, it sounds like you have a bad connection at the cable ends, probably where they are attached to the to battery. Make sure that the cable ends are clean, the battery posts are clean, and the cables are tight.

double check all your connections. you can always bench test the radio with a car battery and any speaker. find your 2 hot wires and 1 ground. (1 hot wire is for memory, but with some radios it will need power also to bench check) make sure all your radio fuses are good, run a set to the speaker, then run the wires to the battery. if the radio powers up, the problem isn't the deck. this has worked for me several times. you can skip connecting the speaker, but I prefer to make sure everything works before I reinstall.

If the motor runs on 3 and/or 4, the motor is O.K. Your switch or resistor is the most likely problem.

Same fuse for dash lights, so if your dash and cluster lights work then your speedo unit is bad or your cluster has a bad trace.
