1982 Ford F 150 - Page 9 Questions & Answers
Truck starts, but has a hard time staying running.
I wouldn't say that the carburator is bad, but it may have some defective components in it, like a sticking float or leaking gasket. Can you see any fuel leaking in or around the carb? You can purchase a carburator rebuild kit at most autoparts stores. You must have the right number for the carb. There is usually a metal tag attached under one of the bolts that hold the carb to the throttle body that will have the number on it and sometimes it is stamped on the carburator body. Before you dig into the carburator, however, check for more mundane causes, like a faulty or fouled spark plug. Hope this helped and best wishes.
Carbuerator flooding itself
Remove the air horn and check the float level. Also check the needle and seat for particles causing it not to seal properly.
Starter is sticking
dont overlook the electrical portion of the ignition sys. its located on the steering colum just where it goes under the dash, there is a rod that the key portion pulls on to operate this.and they do go bad in fact ford recalled many of these for overheated circuits and vehicle fires. not trying to scare you just making you aware as far as the starter itself it could be and with the vehicle age I would replace as P.M good piece of mind for you. have a good day DB
Ford f-150 ignition switch
You will need to take the houseing off around the ignition should only be a couple of screws. Then here comes the fun bit, You will have to see if you can get hold of the tool that undoes and does up the bolts (as I will call them for you not there proper name but tech name may have you going the what ) that hold the ignition on or if not fussy you could just drill them out lift the ignition off after unlocking the steering lock so turn onto first click so radio would normally come on and with the new one you can always just change the bolts that may or maynot come with it( and most times they don't) with hex head ones or what ever is your fancy, but remember if you put it on with a spanner a thief can undo it with one, install just a reverse on uninstall. then you just screw the houseing back on. You maybe able to find or may know someone with ability to get the tool for the original bolts or if handy with a grinder and have a piece of metal around you could try making one. Most are a sort of rounded out triangle, but they usually only do up easily and are very hard to undo without the proper tool and most mechanics will just replace them with new ones as the reverse direction is rounded up to the back side to make it very difficult for a thief to simply undo in a few minutes, I've known people who have used a flat screw driver and smashed a groove into them to undo but remember that will also make them easy for a thief to just remove and bypass your ignition system ie steering locks and soforth

sounds like you need a heavier duty starter. Talk to a starter re builder and tell him the problem and he will probably come up with a heavier starter that will do the job.

check that all the teeth are ok on the flywheel, if you have missing teeth that will cause the noise you are talking about
Egine chugs intermitently
sounds like it might be a vacuum problem check all the vacuum hoses and spray some wd40 around the base of the carburetor while idling. if the engine revs up then you have a carburetor base gasket problem or a leaking vacuum hose
Carbs on a 1982 ford 4x4 6.4L 300-6 4 gear standard
make sure you have no vacum leaks first. And your timing is correct, spark plugs, wires, cap, and rotor are all in good condition. After that run the screw in clockwise untill the engine begins to run rough, stop and back it out 1/2 turn. There is another adjustment the metering rod inside the carb, remove the top of the carb. Adjust the rod screw 3/4 of a turn (clockwise for more fuel counter clockwise for less fuel). It take alot of time, make sure you keep track of your adjustments incase you go the wrong way
