F150 4wd will not engage

Manual shift or Four-Wheel Drive Systems - Electronic Shift I'm assuming you have electronic shift because you refer to relay clicking behind the instrument panel . Principles of Operation Transfer Case - Electronic Shift The four-wheel drive, electronic shift-on-the-fly feature electrically shifts the vehicle transfer case between 2WD, 4X4 HIGH, and 4X4 LOW. The system mode is selected by the operator through the mode select switch (MSS) on the instrument panel. The operator is informed which mode the system is in by two instrument cluster indicators, one for 4X4 HIGH which is 4X4, and one for 4X4 LOW which is LOW RANGE (in 4X4 LOW both the lamps are on). Shifts into 4X4 HIGH can be made at any speed. When shifting into 4X4 HIGH with the vehicle stationary, tooth blockage may occur, preventing shift completion. When the vehicle is driven above 8 km/h (5mph) the shift will complete. When shifting in or out of 4X4 LOW, the generic electronic module (GEM) requires that the vehicle speed be less than 5 km/h (3 mph), the brake pedal be applied, and the transmission in NEUTRAL (automatic transmission) or the clutch pedal be depressed (manual transmission). (The digital transmission range [TR] sensor informs the GEM when the automatic transmission is in the NEUTRAL range position.) The gearmotor encoder assembly is mounted externally on the transfer case. It drives a rotary cam which moves the mode fork and the range fork within the transfer case between the 4X4 HIGH, 4X4 LOW, and 2WD range positions. The GEM uses two relays to control the gearmotor encoder assembly shift between 4X4 HIGH, 4X4 LOW, and 2WD modes. The GEM controls the pulse vacuum hublock (PVH) solenoid which supplies engagement and disengagement vacuum to control the hublocks. The GEM accomplishes shifts by interpreting inputs from:
  • mode select switch (MSS)
  • vehicle speed signal (transmitted from the ABS system)
  • gearmotor encoder plate position
  • brake pedal switch
  • digital transmission range (TR) sensor (automatic transmission)
  • clutch pedal position (CPP) switch (manual transmission)
  • ignition switch
Based on these inputs, the GEM controls the shifts into 2WD, 4X4 HIGH, or 4X4 LOW with the following outputs:
  • low to high relay (clockwise)
  • high to low relay (counterclockwise)
  • pulse vacuum hublock (PVH) solenoid
  • gearmotor encoder assembly
The electronic shift-on-the-fly (ESOF) system has a feature which allows the driver to override the vacuum operated hublocks. When the front hublocks are manually turned to the LOCK position, the hublocks are locked at all times, overriding the vacuum operated system. If the front hublocks are manually turned to the AUTO position, the hublocks can only be locked by turning the MSS to 4X4 HIGH or 4X4 LOW position. Ford 2000 f250 HD crew cab 8 cylinder intermitten starting every day or so

The engines run very lean for fuel efficiency. Although a "cold start sequence" gives the impression of freezing temperatures, the operating range is much higher. The water temperature sensor (some have 2) may be staying too warm for the reset. You may need to change the sensor. Then the fuel mix will be richer and the engine will start.

2001 F-250 7.3 DIESEL STALLED & QUIT & WILL NOT CRANK PLEASE HELP

That engine uses high pressure oil to open the injectors. Of course make sure your oil level is up then try turning it over while tapping on the IPC solenoid to see if you have a high pressure oil issue.

Dies running at various speeds/rpm's. no codes stored sometimes it restarts in 30 seconds. Sometimes has to be towed to mechanic. Mechanic gets in it and it starts. Diagnotics one time found air/fuel

the items that cause changes in the air/fuel mixture are Heated oxygen sensor( in the exhaust manifolds before the cat converters Map sensor Baro sensor Maf/vaf sensors intake leaks ( vent on canister , vacuum hoses etc ) failed cat converter blocking exhaust system The first place I would look at is the heated oxygen sensor(HO2S) as it has rather delicate wires that regularly fail and that causes erratic messages to the ECM

My ford f250 super duty started loading up motor has 72000 triton v8 gas put hand heled code checker on it po303 missing on cylinder 3 ? does that mean plug or fuel injector or no spark

from experience just replace the plug and coil,if been along time since a plug change do all the plugs to be safe.when these motors get spark plugs that are weak it will take out the coils,if you are questioning an injector just start vehicle and listen with a stethoscope to each injector you can hear a difference from the weak one.youy can try whats called a motor vac and this at times will get clogged injectors to come back

My windows and radio take about a minute before they work

My guess is, and it is only a guess, like with any computer the more things it has to remember during boot-up, the longer it will take. Cars have not been cars for some time and should be thought of as mobile computers. This is most true of models using a CAN-bus system where some functions have a high priority and some functions will not be available until the network ceases to be busy. There is probably a cure but I am a complete dinosaur.

Misfire on cylinders 5,4,9,8 replaced all coil packs.

well this could be as simple as ford from the factory used bad wires or the modual under the coil packs could be bad and not providing power to the coil when needed also check crank and cam sensors for and junk stuck to magnets on the tips of them.

Wont crank no start

Hi Philip: Sounds like you may have a battery problem. Make sure it's fully charged and that all terminal connections are clean and not corroded. The next step would be to check the solenoid. Is it clicking? Will the motor turn over if you jump the solenoid?
