A mechanic would first check the ASD relay and make sure the coil has voltage. I assume you have checked the cap and rotor and you are not getting spark from the coil tower.

It's not the oxigen sensor or the fuel pressure regulator - they won't cause backfires, only misfires. In these old 4 cylinder models the most common causes for backfire is a failed distributor cap - replace it and try again. Then check its contacts and the vacuum advance pipe - it plugs on the round thing on the side of the distributor at one end and on the intake manifold on the other. Finally check the wiring to the distributor - if i remember correctly the #20 fuse is powering the ignition.

Timing marks on the pulley can be seen by an arrow mark or a negative mark. If the two pulley is set to the mark you'll be good. By the way, may I know the model of your vehicle sir.

Odd place but it is a dodge. It's inside the vehicle on the passneger side of the vehicle, behind the kick panel. There is a module in there (called a logic module but that's a whole other story) and it is mounted on the lower part of it right on the front of it. I hope you got that and I hope it helps you. i assume you have checked to make sure that the distributor is turn while cranking.if not then you have a broken timing belt,if it is turning then you probably have a bad pickup coil in the distributor.the wires that come out of the distributor that plug into a harness is part of the pickup coil.if you follow the wires into the distributor it will take you to the pickup coil itself this is the part that needs to be replaced.i trust that you checked to for battery voltage to the coil.
