I have a 2004 Ford Freestar with 150,000 miles.
Hi, This could be a sign of lack of oil in the axle, if you could just check that out first & refill the axle that may fix problem. Should that not solve problem I think if you drive it home carefully it should hold out enough to get you home. Please leave me feed back: Malcolm Campbell, Thanks.

How to replace engine coolant temp sender on a 4.2L 2005 Freestar
I am not a Ford guy but I am going to take a shot at this. The switch should be on the intake manifold around the front of the engine or in the front of the engine just below the intake where the radiator hose goes into the water pump. A few of the videos I researched for this answer showed the switch under the truck and screwed into the exhaust manifold but I do not believe yours is there but just in case the other two don't work look there. If all of this fails do a search on goggle for "Where is the temp sw located on a 2005 4.2 liter ford freestar." Hope this helps and I have not confused the issue.

2004 ford freestar heat blowing cold
You need a new heater core and/or thermostat and/or water pump, once you've determined you dont have a busted hose or radiator leak (unlikely because the car would overheat).

2004 ford freestar front blower motor will not come on. Windshield wipers only work occasionally
Pull the control switch out of the dash and check the switch connector for burnt connectors terminals, it will be be discolored, if you do find the switch burnt replace the switch and buy a repair connector from Ford. If the connector is ok then replace the blower motor resistor near the blower motor, it can cause this problem as well, in fact do that first, the blower resistor module is only about $18.00 (Source Rockauto.com). the wipers are controlled through the BCM (body control module), it can be tested with a scan tool. Below is a picture of the blower resistor module.
