Can't budge ford F150 4WD shifter
I actually just had this same problem on my 1997 F250. I decided to try and force it though and snapped it off like an idiot before I realized what the problem was. If you go under your truck, you will see where the 4x4 lever engages the linkage. About 3/4" off the bottom of the lever, you will see there is a 1/2" nub that sits inside a track. Occasionally this nub will "pop" itself outside that track and need to be worked back in"i used a screwdriver and just pryed it back in". This must be a common issue, because mine was out of the track, and when I went to the junkyard to replace, 4 out of 7 were the same way. I ended up getting one and just popped the nub back in and it has shifted with ease for 3 years now. If I confused ya at all, email me at
[email protected] and ill send ya some pics.
Why is my ford diesel hard to start
Hard starts, can be a number of different things...
But most common is some or most of your glow plugs are bad, or your glow plug relay.
if you have not changed to glow plugs, in a few years, you should just replace them. They're not that expensive.
when glow plugs, and the relay are working properly, vehicle starts right up.
Ford e 350 runs rough blows black smoke until you restart it
the truck is either an e350 0r f250 right? now which?
Gas powered rigs ? call the dealer to inquire about outstanding recalls. inspect your fuel pressure regulator for the correct number
F4TZ or newer should be seen. check the oil dipstick for a fuel smell. if the spark plugs show excessive fuel or carbon. change the oil first, and the filter. then use an update regulator, and tune up.
diesel rigs? theres a possibility of fuel injector pump and or injector problems. first determine the glow plug system is right. see a diesel tech about what diesel fuel system yours is equipped with, do the required maintenance, and with good parts does it smoke cold only, warm only or both. then you can begin to get answers. several systems were used and engine displacement must be known to look it up. a faulty glow plug controller or inoperative glow plugs can contribute to cold smoke, a faulty injector pump or leaky injectors can cause warm smoke. some diesels have the newer system and there are a series of updates you must have. parts are very expensive so do your homework first. build date, engine size, injector type, outstanding recalls, tsb's tech service messages. these can all be found at the ford dealer. they will be happy to answer your questions.
Turn to right or left steering is hard to return to center
since there are numerous ways a truck of this size and weight can experience poor returnability of the steering, i suggest system prechecks be performed first. tire pressure. p/s fluid level, belt intact. lubrication service gets regular attention? customer is not braking during attempt to steer. since turns like you describe happen at idle,
like parking maneuvers, i suggest releasing the brake.
the designed caster value engineered into the front axle creates the resitance to turn left or right. the returnability happens by those angles creating preload for the steering parts to return when relaxed. if the driver applies and holds the brake, the brake rotor is not allowed to slip thru the brake pads during low speed returnability.
once prechecks and road test proves concern is still verified, one can only suspect a restriction or blockage exists. inspect all the parts.
is something in contact with the lower steering shaft? hood open, inspect steering shaft that drives the steering gear input. is there contact with something under the hood? next theres a hydraulic restriction test. observe the fluid in the reservoir of the pump while recreating the problem. can you see it swirl or move in the reservoir? if there was a blockage in the return circuit there would be no perceptible movement in the fluid. is the fluid reddish pink? should be, ford specified fluid is type F. maintaining it requires flushing. if its black, that indicates excessive wear. or contaminates.
the bolts that hold the crossmembers and axles should be the next thing to inspect. brackets and braces for the support of the front axles have been known to wear loose and require attention. if they are progressively allowing the front end to sag, you would be able to see it as negative camber. have someone steer it while you observe the parts. any looseness or objectionable movement? mud, rocks obstructing the steering knuckles? visible damage ? bent linkage?
this is something the ford dealer can inspect for you in a few minutes
in the event you need a trained experienced eye!
