There is a starter solenoid between the battery and the starter. Check that to see if it has gone bad. It will not set a light. you can jumper from the power lead to the starter post to see if it engages. Be sure you are in neutral if this is a standard shift because you will be bypassing the neutral switch. The solenoid is on the firewall or well well depending on your options configuration.
It's mounted in the engine block under the injection pump on the driver side of the engine. It's right up against the power steering pump, above a motor mount.
check first in the workshop manual if it is a one piece seal or two piece seal. If it is a one piece seal then the gear box and flywheel have to come off. If it is two piece then the gear box has to come out and the sump has to come off so that the rear main bearing can be removed.
