My wipers are coming on

Hello, Its the Multifunction switch for the turn lever and wiper controls. The contact points are usually corroded or loose and a bump can cause them to make contact. The usual solution is to replace the switch. Only a few styles are capable of being cleaned and disassembled.

You will need to remove the steering column cover. Usually requires moving tilt wheel several times to guide plastic cover out of place. There are 2 wiring harnesses attached to the control. They have flimsy latches and care needs to be taken when spreading the latches or they will break.
The switch has several torx head screws or in some cases Security screws holding the part to the column.

There are differences in the number of contact terminals in the switch. Some have 2 additional posts for other functions. Best to bring in old one to get correct part.

The Code p1633 means "Keep alive power voltage too low". If you type in the captioned sentence in the Browser search box, it will pull up an Article from JustAnswer.com/Ford/18g5e-p1633 and so on. Use that site and the repair will be explained. Our pasting ability does not allow for different Formats to fit our S2008-06-02_220239_1.pngolution screen.

Brake lights wont go off

If the stoplamps are on continuously, the following may be at fault:
  1. Circuitry.
  2. Brake pedal position (BPP) switch.
  3. Multifunction switch (Crown Victoria equipped with the police street appearance package or Grand Marquis)
CHECK THE BRAKE PEDAL POSITION (BPP) SWITCH
Disconnect: BPP Switch. Do the stoplamps continue to illuminate? If yes, continue to the next step. If no install a new BPP Switch.

CHECK CIRCUIT 511 (LG) FOR SHORT TO POWER
Disconnect: Central Junction Box (CJB) Fuse 14 (20A). Do the stoplamps continue to illuminate? If yes, and your Crown Victoria is equipped with the police street appearance package or Grand Marquis, continue to the next step. If Crown Victoria, REPAIR circuit 569 (DG). TEST the system for normal operation. If no, REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.

CHECK CIRCUIT 9 (LG/OG) FOR SHORT TO POWER
Disconnect: Multifunction Switch C202c. Does the LH stoplamp continue to illuminate? If yes, REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation. If no, go to next step.

CHECK CIRCUIT 5 (OG/LB) FOR SHORT TO POWER
Disconnect: Multifunction Switch C202c. Does the RH stoplamp continue to illuminate? If yes, REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation. If the high mounted stoplamp continues to illuminate, REPAIR circuit 569 (DG). TEST the system for normal operation. If the high mounted stoplamp does not continue to illuminate, INSTALL a new multifunction switch. TEST the system for normal operation. Are you saying the passenger light works? If they both do not work, it might be your fuse. If only one works and the bulb and fuse are good, you may have a bad wire. It could point back to the switch, but usually if that is bad, the lights won't turn on.

2005 ford crown victoria shuts

Does it start right back up after it dies or do you have to wait. If you have to wait for a bit then it starts back up could be a fuel pump. It is very possible that if the fuel pump shuts off you lose pressure and the vehicle will just die, it won't sputter like many think. It's not like it is starving for fuel at that time, it just quits working. I know it is hard to diagnose but I have seen a Lincoln Town Car with similar issue and it was the fuel pump. That pump unfortunately is in the fuel tank. If this helps please give me thumbs up. Good luck.

Hello
Since all the lighting circuits go through the multifunction switch including the headlight dimmer circuit, that would have been a highly suspect part. I am a 30 year veteran Ford dealer technician who specializes in Ford electrical system repair and diagnosis, based on my training I think my diagnosis would certainly be the multifunction switch. You must remember that this is really a hands on job and any suggestion I make is made without hands on diagnosis on my part, that said I have seen allot of the Multifunction switches fail in the Crown Victoria (and the Taurus), the most common symptom is no low beams but that by no means is the limit to the problems of this switch. The switch suffers from overheating problems and the connector gets burnt as well, so when the switch is replaced the connector should be replaced as well, in fact in the aftermarket part the new switch comes with a repair connector, the new connector should be soldered in and shrink tubed over the splices, and remember do just one wire at a time. Here is the part number for the aftermarket Multifunction Switch and repair connector kit. My parts source is www.rockauto.com they have the lowest prices I have found for this part kit.

STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS Part # CBS1188 Price:$59.79

I have a 2005 crown vic thatthe wipers turn on by

Unfortunately you are correct. There is a problem inside the stalk switch and it is replaced as a unit. It is an aftermarket part but still can cost $80. Check around for best prices.

To replace the unit you need to remove the cover on the steering column. Disconnect the NEG terminal of the battery and turn the Key to the run position. There is a hole in the bottom steering column cover to insert a 1/4 inch pin or drill bit to the lock release. Push up on the release while pulling the lock cylinder out. The flare on the lock cylinder would otherwise prevent the plastic cover from clearing the Keyswitch.

Using 2 thin slotted screwdrivers gently pry on the mounting clips for the wiring harness. Each connector must come off. Next, there are 2 female torx head screws holding the unit to the column. Remove those screws and the unit can be slide out.

Then reverse the process to reinstall. The only thing good about having to replace the unit for the wipers is that it has all the connections for your turn signals, brake and tailights, plus the Hazard flasher wiring. Now everything is new.

I hope you found my solution very helpful and that you know what to do now.
