it's normal to engine to stall because alternator won't keep engine running. the field control of alternator goes with the batt.voltage then no batt.voltage no field control then no chargelook for good connection at alternator . look for current on one of 2 wire alternator ignition key on (is control by a fuse)

could be dead battery bad starter or locked up motor

Could be the circuit breaker in the headlight switch, or a faulty dimmer switch.Do you have power in and out of the dimmer switch ?

check the wiring harness.... some wires are touching one another.

to put a later model engine in that car,the swap you described will require a complete wiring harness change and computer and all electrical that goes with whatever late model engine you go with.

almost every rear drive drive full size used the 305 V8, so u can get an engine from a Buick La sabre, Pontiac bonneville and firebird, also Oldsmobile 88, and don't forget Camaro. any 305 chevy V8 will bolt in, also the 350 V8 will bolt in, this is a much better choice..
