2003 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 Questions & Answers
I have a 03 chevy silverado 3500 dualie diesel 4wd. I have the push button 4wd and when I shift from 4H to 2H it takes a long time to come out and when it does it comes out with a bad bang. I know th
if you are driving in 4H on hard surfaces and just flip the switch to 2H still on the hard surfaces it will react exactly as you describe
when in 4H as there is no internal diff action in the transfer case , a condition known as torque wind up occurs and places heavy loads on the drive line components thereby locking the gear teeth and that will not allow the separation on selecting 2W drive
if at some point one wheel looses traction for a split section, that torque wind up is reduced and the pressure on the actuator slams the selector out of engagement
4H should only be used in slippery conditions , mud, dirt ,snow, ice, grass etc where the wheels loose traction and allow that wind up to dissipate
if you continue to drive on hard surfaces in 4 H then transmission failure will occur earlier than can be expected
How to manually set the 4 wheel drive in chevy diesel 3500?
You must have an electronic set up. But if you have cable, this will work. Cable , remove the cable and push the arm back 2 spaces/clicks for 4 high. all the way back for 4 low. With electronic. Remove the bolts from the rear part of the drive shaft. Push it a side. remove the bolts holding the motor, remove the motor.. Use pliers to move the rod back 2 spaces for 4 high. 3 for 4 low. reinstall the drive shaft. Beware though. With electronic, the more you do this, you will eventually have to replace that rod..Rebuild it.
How to remove the rear brake drum on a chev 3500
Unless this truck was designed different from all the rest? It should be has simple as pulling off the tire and tapping around the back edge of the drum and it should pop off. Be sure emergency break is off, because that will spread the shoes making the drum wedged on. You did say drum, correct? Because if you have rear disc breaks? Pull tire and remove housing (two bolts) holding the break pads. You may have to stick a pry bar between the rotor & caliper to depress the caliper piston/s. A 350 truck probably has 2-pistons on the caliper. Also. get a couple finger visegrips to depress the pistons all the way down before trying to reinstall the break-pads. This way you don't have to bleed the breaks when you are done. just remember to pump them up a few times before you take off to drive. they will come right back up and should work perfectly.
How do I know if my distributer cap is bad or fuel
If it a cracked cap it's always going to run badly. First put some gas treatment to remove water from gas. if it still runs bad inspect the cap for cracks. even I small crack will be hard to see. Mark the wire location B4 pulling off the cap. in a dark place put a light in cap and block around the bottom to inspect sides for crack. I would try gas/water separator first.
Ignition Key Will Not Turn
You have a bad lock cylinder. This is pretty common on most GM cars. You can try tapping the end of the lock cylinder (where the key goes in) with the hanle end of a large screwdriver. Then insert the key and try to turn. Repeat this process several times. 99% of the time this will work. If you get it to turn than it needs to be replaced immediately. If you can not get it to turn than it will need to be drilled out to replace. The key needs to be in the run position in order for the locking tab to release. I bought my 2003 chevrolet
Hello Justin.
It appears you are looking after your pickup well.
A couple words of advise.
Don't over oil the K&N. Excess oils will deposit on the mass airflow sensor on the intake duct and insulate the hotwire inside it.
Also if it hasn't been done already, synthetic gear lubes in the differentials are great value. They last for a long time and a reduction in friction will also help save fuel, especially if you live in a colder climate.
If your truck has an automatic transmission there is a filter that should be changed if it hasn't been done already. The pan will need to be dropped in order to change it.
Also just in case someone tries to sell you a cabin air filter.
Starting in 2003 model year, the passenger compartment air filter is no
longer available as a factory option. With the redesigned HVAC case,
there is no longer a cavity for the filter. The GM parts catalog
indicates there is a replacement filter available; however, there is no
provision for it.
And of course the fuel filter. This is mounted on the inside of the frame on the left side.
A restricted or plugged fuel filter can overwork the electric fuel pump that is inside the fuel tank.
That pretty much covers the normal maintainence filters Justin.
I hope you get it to 500,000 miles.
Thank you for using FixYa.
