I have 96 monte carlo 3.1. Car feels like it is running great at

Coils usually breakdown under load(accelleration). A sticky valve of lifter is easy to check with a vacuum guage hooked up to the manifold. It will show a steady needle at idle if ok but the needle will bounce if the valve sticks. Does not sound like a coil.

Engine idles up and down and then shuts off

Could be the idle control valve, or the fuel pump may be going and once the fuel pressure drops the engine lopes. A faulty fuel pump relay can also cause the pressure to drop.

Chev Montecarlo 3.4 waterpump replacement

Not difficult at all. Drain radiator. Use 10 millimeter wrench and loosen water pump pulley bolts. The easy way to prevent pulley from turning is place a 3/8 inch drive ratchet in the belt tensioner and increase belt pressure to hold pulley. After bolts are loose, relieve tension on belt to remove it. Then remove bolts from pulley followed by pulley itself. There are 5 8 millimeter headed bolts holding pump on housing. Remove all five, clean housing surface, install new pump and gasket. Although there are five holes it will only line up one way. Pay attention to the removal of the original pump to line up new one. Reverse removal proceedure. Open bleeder screw(s) when refilling radiator. One will be one the metal tube above the water pump housing. The other will be at the opposite end of the engine where the radiator hose meets a metal outlet. This one will need to be opened a few times to bleed air as the thermostat opens after engine is cranked. Hope this helps.
