First define backfire - I know backfiring as a loud bang from the exhaust caused by unburned fuel entering the exhaust and combusting there. Some people refer to a spit-back through the intake as a backfire, the latter being caused usually by a slow burning lean mixture still burning when the intake valve opens. This mostly occurs when the throttle is opened allowing a rush of air without the addition of extra fuel but can also be caused by a poor or delayed spark. Combustion in the exhaust is rare these days.

Problem is usually caused by the regulator in the spider head. It may not be installed correctly, not getting enough vacuum from the intake upper manifold or is failing. Start by checking the vacuum at the manifold.

On a wiring diagram i also see a couple of connectors for the injector wires from the PCM to the injectors ! Check the connectors for pin fit and corrosion .

Tune up, coils ,wires.

The dist rotor turns when you crank it? When you crank it, you should be able to see fuel injector spray pattern/tbi. If you turn the crank by hand, the rotor responds, quickly?

Problem sounds like it's in the power feed from the battery. Try a different battery (may be an intermittent plate or post connection problem in the battery). Also check the fusible link in the cable connected to the positive battery terminal, and check both battery cables from end to end as well as their connectors.

Motor mounts tight?

Possible cracked sparkplug insulator. Faulty plug wires. Both can cause a backfire. I would replace the plug wires if they seem worn, and check each plug thoroughly. Good Luck

Did you put a replacement injector assembly in under the upper intake, this is a major problem with this model. How's your fuel mileage? If this is your prob you need to change it because the leaking fuel goes down in your oil pan, thins the oil and blows your engine. Check your oil, is it over full or smell like gas?

no you don't have to do it PCM don't change base timing and you cannot adjust.

Oxygen sensor.

is your ck engine light coming on, if not ck for fuel pressure when not starting, possibly fuel pump problem if you have no check engine light on
