Sounds like you should take it to a qualified repair shop to have this sorted out. new thermostat is hooked in but does not work either. ??????? The thermostat does not open ???? Engine over heats ? You put it in backwards . Cooling fan relay turns on the cooling fan . It's tough to guide someone through a diagnostic procedure when then don't have any idea how the system works .

Instead of listen to guesses , ( i will told it could be a fuel pump ) I was told it could be a fuel pump Testing before replacing parts is the normal way to diagnose these type problem's Fuel pump pressure an flow testing , voltage drop test the electrical circuit . Check near drive shafts on left or right.

You can't clean an ignition coil. It is a sealed unit.

Could be the speed sensor, plug, wiring. Heat is what makes it work at times.

Turn signal flasher is more then likely bad . Behind dash, on right side of steering column support.

You replaced the headlight switch? Then check for a fusible link or a maxi-fuse that supplies power to the light switch.

I think 1996 was the first year for traction control on Cavaliers.

You can remove the codes (and turn off the check engine light) by simply removing the negative battery cable for a minute or two. Make sure the ignition key is off before you do. Whatever fault that turned on the check engine light on, if it is still there, it will turn on the light again. Then you would want to retrieve the codes and see about repairing the fault. Post back if you need help on how to get the codes to flash out by the light.

Usually with idle issues, it can be a leak of some kind, fuel--egr--vacuum leak, something like that. Also, check and clean your idle air system. How long since a tune-up? Any applicable trouble codes? You should be able to check some codes yourself, your obd1. To check codes, use a jumper wire at your data link connector along lower edge of dash, turn key just till the dash lights come on, no further. The mil on the dash starts flashing, you count the flashes to get the codes. Your looking for two digit codes.

Pull the air cleaner off and crank the engine. If puffs of air come come out of the throttle body when cranking the engine then the timing is not set correctly. Otherwise, after cranking pull a spark plug and see if it is wet with fuel and if so this indicates an ignition problem (coil, distributor/cap/rotor or faulty ECU). Time for a major tune-up! Plugs, wires, coil packs, throttle body cleaning, fuel filter, oil change and filter, and clearing of ODB code issues.

Door lock issue could be several things. The switch is usually the cause, but the relay could also cause this. The convertible top is usually the relay in the trunk. It is on the upper area of the rear seat, in the middle of the trunk. Replace it. I have replaced them before, and the new relay did not work. I re-wired some of these with two relays. One for up control and one for down control. Have fun.
