Removing rear axle seals for
Pull the rear wheels,take off the diff cover,remove the 5/16 pin that holds the big pin,pull the big pin ,push in on the axles,remove the 2 c clips that are on the axles and slide the axles out.If the axle shaft is worn by the bearing,an axle -saver bearing is available. If the axle is ok just pull the seal ,drive the new one in and re-assemble.
I had to start my
First check for 12-12.6 volts at battery if you have 12 volts at battery then,check for 12 volts at starter power cable if you have 12 volts there then check for 12 volts on the switch side of starter solenoid ( purple wire ) this should get you started in the right direction.Let me know what you find out.

Go to autozone.com they have a section where you can look up all that stuff
How do wire in new
turn on your headlights, then....Go to the back of your truck or car....Take a test light and find your hot wire....hook your tag light into the wire you found....this also works in the front of you vehicel...

Start the truck it starts
When was last tune up? Plugs, wires, ALL filters & fluids??? Especially fuel filter. I'd start there and run a good fuel system cleaner through it.
Using a screwdriver I crossed
The starter is shorted - you will have to replace it and the battery. Next check the wires between the starter and the battery and the battery and the body of the car - they might have been damaged by the overheating caused by the huge current passing thru them. Then check the ignition key contacts, when you shorted the plots a part of the current might have went thru it and damaged it - in that case you will have to replace it also.
The fuel pump was recently
You might have lost ground at the sending unit. Make sure everything is plugged in. You might have a defective dash voltage meter or a bad sending unit. Since it went out when you changed it, make sure all is plugged in and you have ground on the sending unit. If you need anything, let me know. I am here to help.

Problem with 84 gmc 2.8l
the autochoke warning light by your description ,ask advice from a local mechanic preferably one with grandchildren so he will be old enough to remember these cars when they were new and will know exactly whats what
