2004 Golf 2.0FSI auto transmission,
Check fluid level first to ensure that there is enough hydraulic pressure for brake bands and clutches to engage fully. Have the engine running in 'park' and remove the transmission fluid dip stick. Check level, colour and smell: it should be pink/red with no hint of any burnt aroma. If it is tinged brown this is due to clutch surface material wearing away. The acrid over cooked smell will arise if the brake bands are continuously slipping and generating heat. If the level looks low top with extra fluid via the transmission dipstick tube (do not confuse this with the gearbox oil dipstick)
VW is a popular make and there will be auto transmission specialists out there with extensive knowledge. It would be no harm phoning around to ask for them to give it an assessment and then to ask the cost of adjustment, overhaul, repair or replacement.

Open you distributor cap and dry the water out. it got wet. It's no big, it just happens. A can of distributor cap spray(at your auto parts store), or a can of compressed air(any office store(much cheaper)), will get rid of the water or moisture. hope this helps
Stuggle to get get gears(1-4and reverse) in a 1995
The clutch may be fine but need adjusting or bleeding (if it's a hydraulic clutch). This can also be caused by a failing throwout bearing, pressure plate, clutch fork, low fluid in a hydraulic clutch or a mechanical linkage that's out of adjustment.
Check for low fluid first because it's an easy solution. If the clutch uses a cable or linkage check the adjustment, it may need tightening.
It's important to address this soon because when you have to force a transmission into gear you're wearing out the synchronizers and you'll miss them when they're gone.
