ASR - Acceleration Skid Control system.
When ASR warning light blinking the system is activated itself for car acceleration skid control.
For today's typical high-torque engines, traction control (ASR) can increase both comfort and safety, particularly when driving on slippery roads or surfaces offering differing levels of grip. Traction control permits smooth starting and acceleration through the full speed range without wheel-spin or fishtailing.
ASR only operates in conjunction with the electronic accelerator (E-gas) and uses components of the anti-lock braking system (ABS). If one wheel suddenly begins to rotate faster than the others (slip), ASR intervenes in the engine management system and reduces power until the wheel stops spinning.
The ASR system represents a further contribution to active safety as it maintains vehicle traction and directional stability throughout the acceleration phase at any speed. In addition, it reduces tyre wear. Activation of the ASR system is indicated by a flashing indicator lamp in the instrument cluster.
The ESP system means the Electronic Stability Program. If the ESP lights on the dashboard permanently the ESP system is faulty. You must access the ESP Electronic Control Unit (ECU) memory for pull out all DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Codes), using diagnostic equipment connected to the data link connector of the car. Then you will be full informed about bad pieces (e.g.: front right wheel abs sensor interrupted, ...). After bad pieces replacement you will be able to erase all faults memored by ESP ECU, in other words reset the ESP system and turn off the warning lamp on dashboard.

Show me how to replace a water on a 1999 VW Passat
It depends on what engine you have, but all 3 are similar. They are all in the front of the engine, so the water pump can be run by a belt. With the 1.8 turbo, it is run by the serpentine belt, but you still have to take the timing belt off because it is behind the timing belt slightly. The Vr6 is run by the timing belt, so also needs the belt removed. The V6 was less common, but also difficult. You do not have to take the timing belt off I think, but you have to remove the whole chassis at the front, because there is so little room otherwise. There really are only 4 main bolts holding the whole chassis front on. It is recommended that the thermostat and timing belt be done at the same time, to save labor, since it is intensive on any engine.
Air bag warning light permanently on on the dash
- The Air Bag Warning light on your dashboard functions just link a check engine light does. When it comes on and stays on there is a issue and the only way to know is to get it Airbag Control Module scanned by a VAG com scanner.
- I don't know if Auto Zone can scan this but it is worth a try as they are free. If they don't then you will have to go to a repair shop and have it scanned. Once you get it scanned you will know what is causing the Air Bag Warning light to stay on. Then you can post it hear and I can assist you further. There is really know way to know until it is scanned.
- Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

Tony
Goes into gear but why won't it move?
You can buy a Valeo Clutch kit for your car for $202 online. At least you will save money on the parts. You can then look for a better mechanic who will not charge you an arm and a leg to install it.It takes time to install the clutch because it involves taking off the engine , installing the clutch then putting the engine back in. Take your time to find the right mechanic or shop. Many will be out to cheat you. If they offer to "fix" anything else refuse any other offers. Call around to other car owners who have had work done on their cars and go with their experience. Choose the one that has had good honest work done on theirs. There is nothing better than word of mouth advertising. Good luck. Hope this info helps you. People like myself would do it for you at a very modest price. But unfortunately we don't know each other. But there are good people out there.
