Air Bag light stays on after engine starts.

The Air Bag light comes on during normal startup, however it now remain on. I assume this condition will disable the air bag deployment? What is the repair solution? Is there anything that I can check that might clear the on light?

You need access to VagCom (the diagnostic software from VW and Audi). You can download it free at www.ross-tech.com, and buy the interface cable for your laptop on eBay for about $20. Or you can pay an hour's labor at a VW/Audi dealer to have them turn off the light.

What probably happened is similar to what happened in my 99 Audi A4. I have side airbags in the seats, and if the front seats are moved all the way back for any reason, it puts tension on the yellow airbag connector under the seat. That pulls it out just enough to open the contact and trip an airbag failure light. What I did was zip-tie the connector tightly (be very careful of the wires, as they're small and you don't want to pinch them), then use VagCom to turn off the light. Using the software is the only way to turn the light off - no ignition cycling or drive cycles, or number of miles driven, nor a battery disconnect, can reset the light.

Use VagCom to find out which airbag is giving you trouble, zip-tie its connector, and have the light turned off. Then you're set.

He can if it's nothing more than a broken cable, otherwise it gets real difficult. Even getting to the ends of the cable behind the dash could be a frustrating experience.

2000 vw beetle heater/air blower speed selector switch. HELP!

Don't know if any of you are from the south, but it's sweltering, and the a/c blower switch in my wife's car just went out.
Here's the deal, fuses are all okay, on top of the battery, and in the fuse box. If I jiggle the fan speed selector switch between the 0-1 settings and hit it juuuuust right, the fan will come on, along with the a/c compressor and light letting me know comfort is a few seconds away. No other setting on this switch will work, just 0.5... and this only lasts a second or two, and then the switch goes out again.
I have been scouring the web for a few hours on details how to access this switch, and can't seem to find a diagram or photo's that are very helpful, and I can't seem to find the part/switch either to purchase. The only part i have found is a "control module" for $500 - surely a switch with 4 settings is not going to cost 500 bucks.
So, question time. Does anyone know where to buy just this ridiculous switch? How to get to this switch? (at this point, a claw hammer is starting to look like a winner to me) and if this ridiculous switch is $500 could I just go and buy a 30 amp toggle switch at the parts store, and hot wire the fan and a/c to run full blast every time she turns the a/c on?
thanks! -Sweaty and fed up in Alabama

diagnostic code po411

My check engine light came on and the diagnostic code for it is PO411. What does this mean? And what do I do to fix that?

The P0410 code refers to the emissions system.
The AIR pump puts air to the exhaust to lower emissions. It takes in outside air and pumps it through two one-way check valves into each bank of the exhaust.
About 90% of the time that this code is set, the one-way check valves have worn out or failed and allow water (which occurs naturally in the exhaust) back into the pump. In any cold climate, especially in climates with higher humidity, this water may be more excessive. The water partially fills the AIR pump, it can then freeze. When the PCM commands the pump on, if the pump is frozen it cannot turn, thus overloading the circuit and "popping" the fuse.

In here you can find the Trouble Codes List:
The CODE mean P0411 Secondary Air Injection System Incorrect Flow Detected

Good luck!!!

Emergency brake light beeps and flashes at random

1999 VW New Beetle: The brake light comes on randomly as I'm driving and will beep loudly as if I left the brake on or something. Of course I did not leave the brake on and can't find a way to make it stop.

it would appear one of 2 things, the plug has come off the brake switch, {under dash} or the wire has been severed and is touching the body hence the light flashing and beeping. Only an inspection can resolve this issue. Good luck

First of all you need to programm all ignition keys using suitable diagnostic equipment (VAS, VAG-Com) connected to the data link connector of the car.

You have an electronic immobilizer key recognition problem. Now your key chip is not recognized by the transponder antenna fitted on the ignition switch barrel.

  • Everytime when you had a new key you must programm all available ignition car keys before trying to start the engine with this new key !!!

This warning lamp indicates that the engine is locked by the immobilizer system, and the engine start sequence must be repeat again.

From year 1995 in Audi-VW (VAG) cars is used engine immobilizer. The VAG group immobilizer system consists of an immobilizer ECU which controls the recognition of keys and the Engine Management ECU system. Immobilizer is activated when the ignition key is removed and, together with the engine control unit, largely prevents unauthorized starting of the engine. The system uses a transmitter and receiver unit in the ignition key (transponder). Whenever an attempt is made to start the engine, it transmits a new code to the car's electronics. The immobilizing is only cancelled and car motor electronic receives permission to start engine if the key sends a right authorization code.

when i changed my alternator, my ac stopped blowing cold ac?

We recently had to replace the alternator in our bug. Before the alternator went bad, the ac blew ice cold ac.. now it doesnt. took it to a shop guy at my work and he said the compressor was good but their must have been a bad relay or something. Is this what is wrong or should i take it to a VW dealership?

Changing the alternator in these cars is a work of art you need more arms than a budda ,what has happened is that in removing the front of the car to gain access either the gas was lost or a safety pressure sensor switch has been left with the wiring connector left loose so it will not work
