1999 VW Bettle shuts off when put in reverse, and is iffy if it actually wants to start?

The problem with it not starting and what you described is most likely caused by the battery cables. You should replace the whole cable from each post on the battery all the way to where it connects to the engine. The part about it dieing in reverse could be related to the loss of ground connections on the computer.

E brake cable

remove the rear wheelsunbolt the ends of the cable from the caliper follow the cable up to the front of the vehicle, unbolting as you go.inside the vehicle, unhook the cable end from the pedal, or handle brake.feed new brake line up and secure the end to the pedal or handle brakeinstall new cable and reattach to the calipersDONE

1999 Plymouth Voyager brake lights and backup

You may have 2 problems.First check the wire connector at the rear left underside of vehicle to see if you have voltage at brake wire. If you do, you may have a ground problem in the light assy.Next identify the wire that goes into the N/S switch to see if voltage is going into and out of the switch. If you have power in and out then you may have a bad wire to the b/u lights or a ground problem at the light assy

If the alarm it's the factory you just need to use your key and unlock the car from the driver side and should do it , if is after market you must disconnect one of your battery post turn the key to on position and then reconnect the battery
