This has happened to me also, I've found what it is is that the tank doesn't is getting lie a vapor lock. It's like when you try to pour a whole gallon of water out at once, it needs air. Try slowing the gas pump down, it shouldn't stop that way.

it should go to the battery

Air filter is under vr6 cover unsnap top & undo clips around side of box

a common problem on these is the EGR valve sticking, u could try taking it off and cleaning it

whether its tdi or petrol, check the fuel filters and if its petrol, check the fuel pump pressure. if these check out, check your coolant temp sensor.
