Timing out by a little bit? Not a rotary is it ,cam belt or chain dont know what mx3 has being a tooth off correct position caused by tensioner ?or a sensor crank or cam ,needs pluging in to a reader or if its early ecu may flash led with fault code.hard when cars on other side of world

sounds like air intake prob

Spray so WD40 around all the vacume hoses and the top of the intake when you find the leak you wil know by the way it changes idle, you also might want to have your cataletic converter check it may be pluged that will keep the car from accelerating.

looks like the shifter bracket workings as a mounting either is broken or stripped .

It could possibly be a short in the ignition itself.

Blue smoke from the exhaust = burning engine oil.

If you downshifted into second at too high of a speed, you may have broken some major parts. I would get it checked by a professional who can properly assess the damage.

Its been a long time since you ask but check the main relay. It engages the starter and the fuel pump while cranking and after ignition a seperate fuel pump relay takes over. I had a car that did the same thing.

check your water pump and ects (engine coolant temp sensor) and just replace head gasket the other thing to check for low idle is under the throttle body is a erg valve it it what lets in more or les air depending on the temp of the engine it has coolant lines going to it and if blocked can not work of this help nz mechanic

All the indications you stated above give a clear indication that the clutches are worn completely. What is required is that you get the gear box serviced - changing the clutch disc will make the diffence you are looking for. The burnt smell you noticed was the complete failure of the clutch plate. It sounds like either the clutch plate or pressure plate. Can you move the car in gear without too much trouble? Some resistance, but can be done! Then you will need to replace the clutch and pressure plates.

It is most likely suspects.

firing order 1 3 4 2 counter clockwise on distributor the timing marks are located on the crankshaft sprocket and cam shaft sprocket disconnect the negative battery terminal prier to any work preformed and pull the spark plugs for an easier turn align the dowel pin on cam shaft with the dowel pin facing straight up the crank shaft pin should also aim straight up. turn the crankshaft twice to ensure they stay aligned

your best bet is to purchase service manual from Autozone, Advance, auto parts stores. They handle Haynes & Clymers manuals (they run about $10) or Amazon, Barnes & Noble. I checked online and you're right it's a mystery why the Mazda forums lack that info...
