i have had same problems i can turn key on radio works and everything else i have found that problem with mine to be a short ground out from the main power lead from the battery to the starter that was shorting it out until i moved it around and found it

have you tried changing the wires and fuel pump, exhaust wont make it not go over 40 just back fire from pressure build up is there a engine light on

Sucks to be you - just kidding. You will need to remove the transmission from the engine and possibly the flexplate as well to access the freeze plugs. You may consider just having the engine and transmission pulled together and having ALL the freeze plugs replaced. If some are failing, the others are not far behind.
