I have a vw caddy tdi diesel van blowing smoke

a couple of things it could be , 1 it might be leaking valve guides+seals if they are leaking the oil drips on the pistons and when started it smokes for a while but eventually clears. 2 piston rings, if the bore is scored or you have a broken piston ring this will cause it to smoke, when engine gets to presure and the oil is thin due to being warn it can seep past either the broken ring or through the score on the bore, you can get it presure checked for that one to see if its 2. 3, being a diesel if the timing is slightly out this would cause smoke and it would be getting to much fuel in the pots to burn and you get a build up of fule that does not burn correctly, but you get other problems with that one, slow acceleration, jerkiness, that sort of thing....anyway hope that helps

How do I bleed the water system on a VW Kombi

To bleed the cooling system effectively you will need to use a cooling system charge unit.Your local VW Commercial dealer has this tool or it can be purchased from a reputable tool dealer e.g Snap-On,Mac,Sealey etc. When used with a compressed air feed, this tool applies a vacuum to the cooling system and draws ALL the air out before replenishing the coolant (this tool uses a sealed system so no chance of air entering system). This STOPS hot spots in the clinder head and turbo

76 Westfalia VW stalls intermittently

I am familiar with the era but not the model. That was the era when German and some British manufacturers used a hall effect device in the distributor to trigger the spark while most other manufacturers used an inductor and reluctor. The hall effect device gave good performance and generally most lasted well but they rarely failed cleanly but would work intermittently for some time before failing. Another problem with the system was the terminals were electroplated steel that oxidised quickly and were difficult to clean. That was also the era of the vacuum unit. Carburettor and distributor vac units were poor quality, expensive and failed often. A distributor vac unit with a puncture allowed fuel vapour into the distributor cap where it would sometimes ignite eventually producing a virtually invisible conductive coating on the inside and causing many annoying starting and running problems. There was also much bad starting during the just-warm and medium-warm condition after standing due to heat soak of new carb designs attempting to cut emissions, especially when an electrically operated automatic choke was fitted. The choke mass cooled rapidly causing an over-rich mixture in an intake already deprived of oxygen. Adopting a different starting technique was effective - pressing the throttle pedal to the floor in one smooth movement and holding it there before beginning to crank the engine. The action opened the prematurely closed choke flap to aid starting ad once running the choke pulldown vac unit then held the flap partway open until the mass heated again. A relatively high fast idle was needed during warmup.
