Engine warning light
Yes that is the mandated symbol for a check engine light on all cars 96 and up, a fault has occured in the engine control electronics, there will be a fault code stored, go to a Kragen auto or any chain parts store like Kragen and they will test the system for free, post the fault code back on this thread
Engine symbol on dashboard on - what does this mean ?
You have a check engine light, a code for something. VW's throw code's easy because they have sensors everywhere. It can be something as stupid as not having your gas cap on tight enough, and then it senses a vacuum leak.Either way, you have to get a code reader, or bring it in to a local parts store, Advance and Autozone, etc. will scan for free. Otherwise, do yourself a favor and buy yourself a cheap code reader off ebay.
Thermostat
Follow the lower radiator towards the engine...thermostat lives where hose enters the engine ...or very close by.......this applies to nearly all water cooled engines.
My passat was sitting in a tow yard for 3 months
After 3 months it is possible the fuel pump has seized up due to the fuel going bad. As of 2 years ago, fuel has a storage life of around 90 days. If the fuel had ethanol in it when it was stored, this fuel stratifies in the tank and the water content sinks to the bottom also ruining the in tank fuel pump. It is also possible other components may have failed coincidentally and you will need a scanner to pull the codes stored in the ECU to see if other sensors have failed. When electronic loaded vehicles sit until the battery goes flat.... it induces a lot of false codes as the system awakes and then goes back to sleep because of low voltage fluctuations as battery looses it's voltage. The ground clamp should be removed from the battery before late model vehicles are put in long term storage to prevent electronic code scrambling .
Coolant tank boiling
if the engine is not overheating, and the coolant tank appears to be boiling, chances are you have a blown head gasket which is pumping air into the cooling system the only escape for that air is the coolant tank
