this is a risky operation for the home machanic as will involve removing and recharging the a/c gas ,if you have this taken care of are you looking for the part or how to do it?

It is most likely the transmission, component causing it would be the valve body, which can be replaced separately, but usually if there is higher mileage on the transmission the clutch plates are also worn and replacing the valve body may not fix the whole issue.

Yes if they are not Climatronic you can. You remove the face plate of the blower levers/switches, remove the circuit board and you;ll find the bulb inside.

There are two systems used by VW for heating and cooling . Electronic and manual systems. The electronic type will need a scanner plugged into the OBDII port under the dash or in the center consul to read any codes the system has stored. These systems are not a diy proposition.The manual system is simpler to visually diagnose .. Turn on ignition to the run position without starting the engine. Turn a/c ON and blower to the 1 to 4 position. Raise the hood and see if both radiator fans are running. You can hear and feel that both are running.If fans are not running, then it is possible the fan controller is bad. It lives under the chassis rail that is directly under the battery.The rotary switch to control the a/c has a high failure rate too.The radiator fan controller will also deny a/c operation if the emissions control computer ( ECU.) has a fault code stored. This needs a scanner to read the stored codes and clear them after code fault is rectified.If there is no blower speed other than #4, then the resistor pack has burnt out and it lives under the glove box on LHD vehicles.The system also has a feed back sensor in the high pressure a/c line going into the firewall (on the right side looking in from the front) This sensor has a high failure rate and if wrong pressure or no pressure signal is sent to comfort controller system will not run a/c cooling....low Freon pressure will cause non a/c operation too.If you can search out a VW shop, they have most likely seen this problem many times.

the obd system will not reset till you fix the part that is broken system runs checks on everything and if it finds a broken item three time it throws a check engine light on read codes fix issue then clear codes removing negative cable for ten minutes

run fault codes and rectify faulty sensor/ servo. use the code reader to reset the CPU to turn off the light.
