I am having a similar problem on a 2003 Volkswagon Passat 1.8L 4 cylinder manual engine. My batter (after 10 years of service) died about a month ago. When the engine is cold and I start it up the engine (if I do not carefully add gas to rev the engine) will idle at around 200 to 400 RPM and then stall. The problem does not occur after the engine has been going for more than about 90 seconds. No check engine light is on. Ideas anyone?

Does it fold down?If so must be a button sumwhere on back of it.

There are several things that few people know about starting cars in cold weather. 1. Check your battery to make sure it is not rusted, leaking, and has a charge 2. Jump start your battery with another car, even if you believe the battery is good, this often times will still start your car. 3. If your engine is cold, and you have an older car, ensure to get your fuel lines to the engine flushed or have fuel injection service performed 4. The engine tends to warp the same way wood does during the extreme cold, do not be afraid to continue trying to warm up the engine by constant cranks with it is cold out. Your not going to hurt the car, the worse that could happen is too much fuel will enter the carborator and cause flooding in the system to occur. Wait 20 minutes if this happens and start to crank again 5. Bad spark plugs are a major reason why many cars take a very long time to start 6. Please have your spark plugs removed and exchanged for new ones. Over time, spark plugs become fowled and prevent the car from starting even thou you hear cranking!!!

major overhaul... or just tried to pour in the oil treatment to slow down, but it not help much.

Probably the IAC which control the idle but usually you will see some erratic idling as well. Pretty sure something to do with the control of idle and fuel. Maybe you need to clean throttle body and raise idle some might help. Have IAC checked. 

the choke has 3 screws to adjust the unit,the choke itself will normaly be siezed inside at the age.With a warm engine, loosen the 3 screws and turn the choke untill the idle drops.

or as i did it-with a cold engine, remove the airffilter and with the 3 screws loose on the choke press the accelerator pedal just over half so the choke is engaged and the looking inside the filter housing adjust the choke flap by turning the choke housing until the flap is 3/4 closed and tighten slightly and start the car.Do remember to check your distributor timing whith a warm engine and make sure the sparkplugs and airfilter are okay as each upsets the other.

Could you have problem with the valve for passage of coolant heater or problems in the gate that divides the heater and air conditioning as this does not select good

check vackum lines that come out of fire wall to intake manafold and throtel body/check fuse forlights and cruize.

The water pump is on the passenger side of the engine, under the alternator and AC, above the power steering. The thermostat is in the bottom of the water pump where the lower rad hose connects to the pump. Hope this helps.

put the meter in series remove wire gointo back of alternator put one lead on wire and one on alternator that should give you your reading
