Hello yes I just brought a 1997 Mazda protege automatic..
When its cold first couple of times shifting from 1st to 2nd its extremely harsh. It jerks in to 2nd .. After warm it seems to stop jerking. and is ok.. Any ideas what can be causeing this? I already put some Lucas trans. fix in it. Still no change. Car only has 78,000 miles
I would try a flush. If its set up like my 96, and it likely is, changing the trasmission gasket and filter will be difficult. Mine has a medal plug on the bottom and takes an allen wrench, and possibly a breaker bar. If you take out this plug, drain, flush then refill via the dipstick tube and a funnel, it may help. You may need to do this a couple of times due to fluid still in the torque converter, pan, etc.
Lucas is good stuff, I would add it again when I was done. The tranny fluid should be pink, mine looked like used oil black before I flushed it.
Also, when adding the new fluid, shift slowly up and down through all of the gears to lube well and check your fluid levels after 100 miles or so, as sometimes a bubble will form and make it look full....then not after it pops.

I have a '97 Protege with 1.5 motor that has trashed five belts and three alternators in the last eight months. The belt squals under electrical load, at which point I can tension it slightly, but that only lasts about a week at which point we repeat the squeal/tighten sequence until I snap a belt or burn-out an alternator.
The car has been super reliable other than this.
check all the pulleys for alignment and wear, Also check the alternator output (make sure it is not always under load) hook up and ammeter on the positive) what
Are you running a large stereo? if so this can cause this especailly if the large stereo is not fused

I need a fuse box diagram for a 1997 mazda protege dx. i have misplaced the owners manual and the diagram is not on the panel door. looking for the fuel pump fuse, specifically. When I prime the cylinder with fuel, it starts, but runs out quickly. The tank has gas. Spark plugs are good and ignition is fine. Fuel is the only issue. First time starting in a couple years.
Yes - sounds like a Pump fuse, relay, or a pump...When you cycle the key (off-on-start-on) do you hear the pump running?
The fuel pump fuse may be under the hood with the other engine fuses - and it well may not be -(there is an accessory fuse box that has all the fuses for the inside accessories in it - located in the passenger compartment somewhere)- also check the kick panels at the drivers left foot and the passengers right foot -(If they pop off easily - The fuse box plastic cover will pop off easily, not attached with screws - so if you see screws or nuts, it won't be there) Look up under the dash on the drivers side, and also lastly check in the glove box- If you cannot find it, I'd see if I could find a Mazda "lovers" web-site - Often they post what is called "component locator" information, that would tell you exactally where it is (Normally you have to pay for access to that information - gotta love the web), or you may be able to locate a electronic owners manual there as well which will definitely tell you ...Best of luck and hope that helps some....

How do you repair 1997 mazda protege idle air control valve
if the idle air control valve is the problem, you most likely have experienced some rough idling of the car while in park and maybe driving, and RPM surges while the car is idling. THIS site provides more info on it.

just had the fuel pump changed ..it idles a little high but runs smooth...not burning too much gas and not getting hot
Flashing engine light means lean misfire where there is lessor or no fuel in the cylinders and more oxygen in the exhaust system.
