How to replace thermostat in 1996 Altima
Hi Bob, Wait until the engine is completely cold. (Over night is good). Drain the radiator and then look at it, identifying the top radiator hose. Follow it to where it joins the engine. and there you will see a domed housing held in position by three bolts. Remove those and lift the housing where you will find the thermostat. As you have forgotten to mention what engine is fitted into your vehicle it is difficult to be very specific with directions. Some Nissan engines are fitted with bleeding systems for the cooling system. You will need to look and identify anything with a label which states "Do not open when hot.' The bleeding nipple will be above the height of the top tank of the radiator. If you find one, it means the system needs bleeding of all air. Remove the rad cap and loosen the bleed screw until coolant flows from it in a small stream. Fill the required amount of coolant/anti freeze and top off with water and keep it flowing until all air bubbles are expelled from the bleed screw and then close the nipple. If yours is a system which needs bleeding the bleeder on Nissan's is often situated on the surge tank ontop of the intake manifold. Regards John

The
following are the general instructions on the start of diagnosing any
electronically controlled engine or transmission problem.
The
engine and the automatic transmission (transmission control is only
for automatics, engine is still computer controlled no matter the
transmission type) in this vehicle are computer controlled and in
most cases when a fault occurs a fault code is stored in the memory
of the computer control module. There are exception to this, such as
the Mass Airflow Meter and fuel pressure problems. What must be done
is to have all the basic testing done such as a scan of the system
for fault codes as well as a check with a live data scanner tool for
engine functions that are not within range of normal, a trained
technician is required to know what is correct and what isn't, then
based on careful diagnostics done from a factory repair manual the
correct part is replaced or the wiring repaired or the computer
replaced (known as the PCM), which is very rarely the problem. Other
basic checks must be done as well such as mechanical problems with
the engine as well as engine state of tune and mileage on the engine.
The transmission can have mechanical issues as well such as no gear
engagement at all or a failed pump or other pressure related
problems.

1996 nissan altima no acceleration and poor idle?
check whether you might have a catalyst problem,1. doesn't idle as no emissions let out of the exhaust system,2. doesn't accelerate as the engine is pressurized as no released emission. Try to check by requesting somebody to accelerate as steady and you check through the end of your exhaust pipe if the emission outlet sound is loud enough or if is like weak sound.if is the second result surely your cat is the problem as also you receive a smell of a rotten egg as well.
