One of the blend door motors on the A/C Heater assembly may be stuck or defective or one of the linkage arms may have fallen off.Slide under the dash a bit and slide the temperature button.
You may have to take a panel or two off above the passenger/drivers feet area.
Can you see any movement on any linkage or locate the noise at one of the blend door motors?
You might just see a linkage arm off and you may be able to reattach it.
not a distributor cap problem as any problems there results in misfiring, no start at all, back firing etc
have the fault codes read for a electronic sensor fault
( maf/vaf / baro /ambient temp sensors etc)
was it a new maf fitted or a referbed unit most new mafs sold only have a 6 month warranty are there any other fault codes present or just the maf fault code I agree with you a fault in the maf can make the car behave that way the maf has a few functions with sensors in the unit other sensors can also cause the engine to behave that way 02 sensor / faulty transmission solenoids and TPS different car maker i have just done a diode jump at the ECU bypassing a faulty sensor in a maf so far maf throws a fault code but no more problems
Hi,first of all you need to know if there is a spark on the plug,if there is,it could be that the car has worn valve sills,or it could have worn piston rings, you should try doing a compresion test this will give you a good idear what state the engine is in,a haynes maneul will help giud you,all the best.

Code 11 crankshaft position sensor or Camshaft position sensor. Code 21, Ignition Signal, Diagnostic Tree . Best to take to dealer for repairs and to remove codes, the codes do not mean the units are faulty ,just there is a fault, could be just a bad connection.
call you local auto parts store and ask if they can check you car out with a cen-tech trilangual code reader, this device will talk to the on board computer, troubleshoot and tell the auto parts person what fuse is bad and you will not waist a lot of time and money
