We are tryin to time
Ignition timming is 15 degrees BTDC and is the 2nd mark on the crank pulley from the right. The timing to be set 15 degrees BTDC at 850 rpm.
Cam timming is set by (obviously piston no.1 at TDC) aligning the marks on the cams with the marks on the outer edges of the back plate behind the cams. (they are roughly horizontal) Then aligning the mark on the cam sprocket with the mark on the oil pump housing, which is diagonaly down and to the right. Make sure the slack is on the tentioner side so as to keep the timming correct.
Start the car, and shine the timing light at the crank pulley. The crank pulley has 6 timing marks on it (some only have 5). There are usually 5 white marks and one orange mark. Looking at the pulley, going around clockwise, the marks go: 10 degrees ATDC, TDC, 5 degrees BTDC, 10 degrees BTDC, 15 degrees BTDC, 20 degrees BTDC. The mark colours are white, orange, white, white, white, white looking at the pulley.
You want to have the light flash on 15 degrees BTDC - this is the standard timing for a CA18DE. If for example the light is flashing on 20 degrees BTDC, turn the CAS slightly clockwise this will ****** the timing - turn it slightly until the light is flashing on the 15 degrees BTDC mark. If for example its flashing on the 10 degrees BTDC mark, turn the CAS anticlockwise - this will advance the timing - adjust it until you have it just right. When its correct, being very careful not to move the CAS at all, do up the CAS mounting bolts, remove timing light and HT lead, put the coilpack you removed back in, and you are done.
