My guess is that after it ran out of gas, the key was in the forward position for a while and you unknowingly interrupted the antitheft system. Try to reset it. RELEARN PROCEDURE: Turn the key on, with the engine OFF. Try to start the engine, then release the key to ON, Engine will not start. Watch the security telltale, after about 10 mins, it will turn OFF. Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds. Repeat steps 1 through 4 two more times for a total of 3 cycles/30 minutes. You must turn the ignition OFF for 30 seconds before attempting to start the vehicle after the 3 cycles. Then start the engine . Do It Yourself GM Security bypass

check battery terminal cables they can sometimes work loose with age from the terminal itself hope this helps

Is there a security light lit on the instrument cluster ? Anti-theft system problems will disable fuel injectors .

No. You can drive it till it locks up.

To re-connect the bar. Have an assistant hold the lid while you reinstall it. I know this part is tricky.First look to the L/S and see a grduated adjustment fixture ( where the rod fell off from ) I would use a 6' 1/2" drive extention with a deep 1/2 " drive socket.The trunk torque bar ( spring ) has a app 3/8"wide end pointing down when held. Place socket/ext over end , applying pressure to turn the pint of the spring towards you, then latch in appropriate groove ( see R/S to gauge groove location ). A pipe can replace the tools. Joshua, Have transmission scanned for trouble codes, check fluid level and top up if needed, maybe shift solenoid, sprag in transmission,etc.. Have a good technician diagnose and estimate repair.
