The air conditioning fan on my 1989 oldsmobile toronado trofeo with automatic temperature control doesn't work. The AC puts out cold air but the fan doesn't blow it into the cabin.

I assume you checked fuses for condition and power to and through the fuse to the fan. Locate the fan motor and check for power and ground with a volt ohm meter. Check for continuity thru the motor t make sure it is not bad.

Dash inop

There are several things that could cause this problem. If you can't do the testing yourself, you should take it to a reputable shop that specializes in electrical diagnostics. It could be a fuse, a wiring problem, or something in the dash cluster itself. Your Toronado has at least three computers (the IPC, the BCM, and the ECM) as well as a Central Power Supply module. Pinpointing problems is not a simple task. Check all the fuses. Is it an intermittent problem? Are all the gauges not working? Can you retrieve any error codes? A common problem with the digital dash cluster is that eventually the capacitors leak, causing display problems.

On my 1988 toronado the head lights will go off

Does your vehicle have the Twilight Sentinel option? The sliding contacts on these switches are notorious for going bad. When they lose continuity they cause all sorts of weird lighting problems. Your best bet is to find one on eBAy and replace it. You might be able to disassemble the one you have and clean the contacts, but it is not really worth the effort.

Headlights will not work

Have you checked the circuit breaker for the headlamps? It is in the fuse panel in the glove compartment. Should be 20 amps, probably in position 22. You'll most likely have to replace it with a known good one; there's no way to tell if it's bad just by looking at it. If that doesn't take care of the problem, it could be in the headlamp switch, the dimmer switch, or somewhere in the wiring. If one headlamp was out, it would be easy. With all four out, it gets a bit more complicated. If your Trofeo has Twilight Sentinel, it a WAY more complicated. If replacing the circuit breaker doesn't work, I would recommend finding a shop manual (eBay is a good source) and following the diagnostics.

Complete dash goes blank and shows

Most likely...the "CPS" module is going bad. This is a power supply module under the dash, that supplies a 7 volt supply to the dash panel AND the BCM and climate control system, among other things. When it fails,. the dash will go blank EXCEPT for that "electrical problem" message--and the climate controls will NOT work, and such....and if you have the VIC, as I do in mine--it will kind of be "frozen" while the problem is present. Re-starting the car will usually "clear it up" for awhile. My own 1989 trofeo has this problem a BIT, every few months or so...it will "do it" and I have to reset it. If it starts to get worse--i will get another CPS or try and fix mine. Mine--and maybe yours--have bad connections most likely....and should be easily fixable, and maybe a couple of bad capacitors too.

As someone said...these old cars are a LOT of fun to drive, and frugal on gas and such...but at this age...they need some 'care and feeding" from us to keep them running, and performing, good.

How do you reset the BCM on a 1989 Oldsmobile Toronado

The 89 models do not have a BCM. If you are talking about resetting the ECM, then disconnect the batter, wait a couple minutes, and reconnect it.

My electronic dash and climite

According to the 1988 shop manual, the IPC instrument panel cluster - and the overhead map lights
receive power from the computer modules which seem to be located behind the glove box, I plan to
remove the cardboard from the glove box and check for loose connectors. If this fails, I will contact a
self employed mechanic who used to work for an Olds dealer. He is both competent and honest.

How to change serpentine belt on a 1990 oldsmobile toronado trofeo

All you have to do is rotate the belt tensioner to relieve tension on the belt to remove. it. The belt routing diagram should be located on the right (passenger's) side strut housing tower inside the engine compartment. Route the new belt according to the diagram, and rotate the tensioner again to slide the belt onto the last pulley before releasing it. It may be easier to slip the belt over the water pump pulley last, depending on how your engine is configured.
