It sounds like you have an exhaust obstruction. Check that you have good exhaust flow out of the tailpipe while the car is running. If you do not have good flow out of the tailpipe, begin trying to find the clog. (You will likely find that the "breakdown" ruined the catalytic converter and clogged it.)

Check the slave cylinder for leak, 9/10 times is the slave cylinder. Check for fluid on the filler cap.

What hoses are you trying to reach Jane,I got a 85 nissan truck,has a 2.4 engine,can you take pics or do a video.Here's a video of my engine.

Must be a heater hose usually I use a box cutter and cut hose and peel back with a screwdriver carefully not to damage fitting. this can cause the heater core to leak. some time they can be seem through wheel well with tire off may be able to reach for removal.

just a longer tool and someone with small hands there is a hose puller tool its like a wrench fits around hose and clamps in and a little applied preasure most the hose jobs like that are done from underneath the vehicle not top

check for air leaks around the injectors and inlet manifold
