Sounds like the EGR valve is stuck in the open position.You can try to clean the carbon out of it or just replace it.

Did you set the computer to Diagnostic Mode by using a paper clip or scan tool connected to the ALDL connector underneath the steering column? Most GM's 1981 and later may need to short pins A & B to set the timing as well as disconnecting the vacuum advance.

If the starter cranks very fast when you are trying to start to check for spark, it is a possiblity that you have a busted timing chain. This explains the rapid sound of you starter engaging, because the crankshaft is not being turned and the camshft is not either therefore no spark is made.

Check the voltage at the battery with the engine running. Should be 14 volts or more. If not then the alternator needs repairs or the wiring from it to the battery is faulty.

As a first course of action, I strongly suggest that you have the battery charged. It can be an indication of a weak battery or a faulty alternator. If the battery light still on after charging then the problem will surely be on the alternator itself. If that's the case the alternator should be replaced to resolve the problem.

You may try to reset it to by removing the positive battery connector, letting it sit for at least 5mins. then reconnect it again. This will reset the system and can get the battery light off.
