1992 Buick Century - Page 9 Questions & Answers
I need to know how
must have a adjuster on it somewhere i would have thought ,but as iam in spain and never worked on one i have no idea where it is ,as its an old car the adjuster is most likely on the alternator or the power steering
My buick century 1992 starts. it runs for awhile
This could be several things and this forum cannot support the multiple possibilities, however, I would check the following in this order:
1. Fuel pressure
2. Ignition system
3. Battery voltage under load.
4. Fuel filter
5. Any GM lockout or security systems
I know this is somewhat vague, but there are many, many potential causes.
I hope this helps:)
I changed the oil, spark
your timing could be off or possibly you need a new rotor in your distributor cap or even a new distributor cap.. does your exhaust smell like gas or anything unusual like that it is running rich?
Im thinking about putting a supercharger or turbo
It is a complicated idea. Love the possible boost, but here is the deal. The original engine has higher compression than a turbo or supercharger engine. Essentially you blow your machine apart, pretty quickly in some cases.
There are ways to adjust your compression, and you can limit boost, and failure to do so kills your ride. Now, if there is a kit that does what you want, these issues should be handled by the supplier. IF there are mods that address compression, detonation, and the like, you should be able to expect success.
Anyways that is where the issue lies.
How do I replace mycrank sensor on a 1991 Buick
Crankshaft Sensor
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
3.8L Engine
On vehicles with a manual transaxles, the crankshaft position sensor is easily accessed from beneath the engine. On vehicles with automatic transaxles, the rack and pinion heat shield and the converter intermediate exhaust assembly must be removed first.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Disconnect the electrical connector at the sensor.
- Using a 28mm socket and pull handle, rotate the harmonic balancer until any window in the interrupter is aligned with the crank sensor.
- Loosen the pinch bolt on the sensor pedestal until the sensor is free to slide.
- Remove the pedestal to the engine mounting bolts.
- While manipulating the sensor within the pedestal, carefully remove the sensor and pedestal as a unit.
To install:
- Loosen the pinch bolt on the new sensor pedestal until the sensor is free to slide.
- Verify that the window in the interrupter is still in the correct place.
- Install the sensor and pedestal as a unit while making sure that the interrupter ring is aligned within the proper slot.
- Install the pedestal and tighten the engine mounting bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
3X Sensor
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Remove the sensor harness connection to the sensor.
Fig. 1: Unsecure the harness, then unfasten the bolt to remove the CKP sensor
- Unsecure the sensor block bolt.
- Remove the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor from the vehicle. Inspect the O-ring for cracks and replace if needed.
To install:
- Install the new O-ring if needed and lubricate with engine oil.
- Install the sensor into the hole in the block.
- Install the mounting screw and tighten to 71-88 inch lbs. (8-10 Nm).
- Attach the sensor harness connector, then connect the negative battery cable.
Dual Crank Sensor
Sections 3 and 4 of this manual also cover testing, removal and installation, and adjustment of many computer controlled components.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Remove the belt(s) from the crankshaft pulley.
- Raise and support the vehicle safely.
- Remove the right front wheel and inner fender access cover.
- Remove the crankshaft harmonic balancer retaining bolt, then remove the harmonic balancer.
- Disconnect the sensor electrical connector.
- Remove the sensor and pedestal from the engine block, then separate the sensor from the pedestal.
To install:
- Loosely install the crankshaft sensor to the pedestal.
- Using tool J-37089 or equivalent, position the sensor with the pedestal attached, on the crankshaft.
- Install the pedestal-to-block retaining bolts. Tighten to 14-28 ft. lbs. (20-40 Nm).
- Tighten the pedestal pinch bolt 30-35 inch lbs. (3-4 Nm).
- Remove tool J-37089 or equivalent.
- Place tool J-37089 or equivalent, on the harmonic balancer and turn. If any vane of the harmonic balancer touches the tool, replace the balancer assembly.
NOTE: A clearance of 0.025 in. (0.635mm) is required on either side of the interrupter ring. Be certain to obtain the correct clearance. Failure to do so will damage the sensor. A misadjusted sensor of bent interrupter ring could cause rubbing of the sensor, resulting in potential driveability problems, such as rough idle, poor performance, or a no-start condition.
- Install the balancer on the crankshaft. Install the balancer retaining bolt. Tighten the retaining bolt to 200-239 ft. lbs. (270-325 Nm).
- Install the inner fender shield.
- Install the right front wheel assembly. Tighten the wheel nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm).
- Lower the vehicle.
- Install the belt(s).
- Reconnect the negative battery cable.
24X Crank Sensor
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Remove the serpentine belt from the crankshaft pulley.
- Raise and support the vehicle safely.
- Remove the crankshaft harmonic balancer retaining bolt, then remove the harmonic balancer.
- Disconnect the sensor electrical connector.
- Unfasten the sensor bolts, then remove the sensor.
Fig. 2: The 24X crankshaft sensor is secured by two bolts
To install:
- Install the crankshaft sensor to the engine with the two mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to 8 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
- Attach the electrical harness to the sensor.
- Using tool J-29113 or equivalent, install the harmonic balancer to the vehicle.
- Apply a thread sealer such as GM 1052080 or an equivalent to the threads if the crankshaft balancer bolt, then tighten the bolt to 110 ft. lbs. (150 Nm).
- Lower the vehicle.
- Install the serpentine belt.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable.
Wat does the serpentine belt go around to helmak
The engine's operation moves the serpentine belt, not the other way around. The serpentine belt uses engine power to operate the power steering pump, the air conditioning compressor, the alternator.
My hood release is broke and the cable is
the Best thing to do is remove the cable and try to unwind the outter cable if you get lucky with unwinding the cable then with a pair of small vise grips grab the center cable and pull, if it pops loose open the hood and buy a new cable. If this is the only car you have to drive be sure you use a chain and bolt to hold it down while you drive it to the parts store to buy new cable. You will Have to buy from the Dealer or from a wrecking yard. If you can't get the cable loose from inside the cab you will need a pair of long needle nose plyers to reach threw the grill and pull on the release cable. good luck hope this helps. You might find a mechanic that has the tools to do it for a reasonable amount.
Is there a fuse for the auto door locks?
Yes but if the interior lights are working then its getting power, i would check the switch itself, and also check the wires coming into the door there located where the door hinges are, inside the rubber boot, remove the boot anmd take a good look at that bunch of wires they sometimes break in half, it may be hard to see you need to check wire by wire, hope this helps.
Car died. changed fuel pump and both filters. car
Check for spark and fuel as a starting point. If you're getting fuel pressure at the rail, then the fuel pump and filters are not the problem.
Possible crankshaft sensor if the spark is not getting to the spark plugs in the 1992 Buick Century.
Replace water pump
Very simple job even for the do it your selfer. All bolts are easy to get to you need a 3/8 ratchet 10mm socket and a 13mm socket. Remove the serpentine belt . remove the 4 10mm bolts holding the pulley on the pump remove pulley then remove the mixture of 10mm and 13mm bolts holding on water pump clean gasket sealing surfaces very well (or you will have a leak) install gasket and reinstall parts. when refilling with coolant make sure to open bleed valve (on thermostat housing) to purge out excess air close when it spits pure coolant Hope this Helps GOOD LUCK
Where is the crankshaft positioning sensor located
Behind the large pulley at the lower part of your motor. You have to remove the belt and then loosen the large bolt that holds it in place. Use a pulley puller to remove the harmonic balancer. With that off, loosen the screw that holds the bracket to the mount. Position the new bracket on the mount and tighten. Be sure that the gaps in the new sensor are postioned correctly. Replace balancer and belt and you should be good to go.
