1999 dakota with a 5.2 motor.I can drive it any

It is most likely one of two issues. Either the Camshaft sensor, or the Crankshaft sensor. Neither is too expensive nor too hard to replace. Try the Cam Sensor first. The 5.2L seems to have these more often. The 2.5L has the same problem, but it's usually the Crank Sensor.

Troubleshootin po1391 and po740

The 1391 most likely is the cam sensor or crank sensor, crank sens is located in the bell housing on the pass side and I believe the cam sensor is in the distributor, 740 is a TCC (Torque Convertor Control) performance code. The crankshaft sensor is my 1st choice, TCC performance is calculated comparing engine speed to vehicle speed.

make sure you pushed that senor all the way in. if its too far from the tone ring then itll keep the light on. also you have to drive it over 5mph to turn the light off after fixing it.

79 318 over heating at 50 mph fine at idle new

The only other things are that the hoses could be collapsing on the intake to the water pump, the coolant has to be 50/50 and the radiator should be checked for obstruction. Also dont trust the dash guage.
