I have a 1990 mitsubishi

You've already eliminated the spark plug & wireset, distributor cap & rotor.
Sounds like your car needs a tune-up, specifically, the PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve, and/of the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve.

Components checked/replaced during a tune-up are:
air filter
motor oil
motor oil filter
breather filter
fuel filter(s)
fuel strainer
PCV valve
EGR valve
spark plugs
spark plug wires
ECM or distributor cap & rotor
cabin air filter
transmission oil filter
transmission oil
engine coolant
check all vacuum hoses and lines

I have a 1993 Mitsubishi Mightymax 2.4 L4 and i

if you done it by ear --ie turning the distributor then you are not far out akthough a professional mechanic might get it a bit better i mean by this a old school mechanic but if your in doubt then use a timing light and set timing to to about 6 to 8 degrees before TDC depending on the compression ratio and fuel used ,an old GT type engine can be as high as 12 or 16? running on 101 octane fuel but a newer vehicle running on 91 unleaded will be around 6? maybe even 4? ,The octane rating is the amount of additive used to prevent pre detonation of the fuel but certain refineries sell this low grade low octane fuel that isnt of the same standard and the flame rate when it burns is a lot lower and also the carbon it produces when it burns is greater .no if it sounds ok and doesnt pink or overheat then leave well alone

Maintenance required light comes on. I need to

Hi. normally, this warning concerns minor service like a oil change needed or some minor flushing of the transmission or radiator(coolant system). I wouldn't take this warning lightly. Check your oil just to make sure its not low or extremely black. you can also check the consistency by gathering a small amount of oil with your finger tips and rubbing it in between your pointer finger and thumb. if the oil feels gritty and not smooth, its time to change it. there may be small microscopic metal fragments that can ruin the cylinder walls and much more.

Check the coolant level as well. make sure the overfill tank is filled to the right level.

A diagnostic cpu scan wouldn't hurt as well. this is good preventive maintenance and will save you money.

Please rate and god bless:)
