Oil light flashing

Usually the light is warning the driver the engine oil pressure has dropped below 5psi. You would need to make sure the engine oil level is correct, then have the oil pressure checked or the switch replaced.

I have a 96 jetta after replacing the water pump and upper radiator hose it over heats what could be the cause of my car over heating

Assuming the water pump is working correctly, my first guess would be air in the cooling system. It has to be bled after repairs are made to get the air out and make sure it is full of liquid coolant.

Where the plug for tranny on 96' jetta is located?

On the manual transmission you go through the vehicle speed sensor (VSS). Its suppose to go 1/2 way up the teeth marks. Does it not say in the Chiltons manual? I can check when I get home.

There is a thin green wire that runs from the alternator the the fuse cluster. My 2.0 golf was doing the same thing. That wire was not getting a signal to the alternator and it would not only continue to run but was over charging my battery and untimely killed it. Re run a new wire and you should be good to go. - Joe

How do i fix low gas mileage

First, high mileage, older car - loss of mpg.
Second, have you heard of keeping your car in good running shape - meaning doing the maintenance an a regular basis?
Change the oil on time, change the air filter, make sure every thing is working right, make sure the tires are wearing right.
All this contributes to good mpg - but older high milage - loss of mpg.
Can't fix that!

It was about -30 outside

These engines require a LOT of amperage from the battery. A battery's amperage output is severely decreased in the cold weather. If your battery is old, it may not have the power to turn the engine over. Your solutions are (1) warm the engine to allow for easier turn-over and (2) put a charger on the battery to keep it warm in cold weather. The first can be accomplished by having your dealer install a soft-plug block heater. As to charging the battery, be sure the charger is one that monitors the battery's charge and turns itself off when the battery is fully charged.
If this does not help, then your cold cranking may have caused your starter to begin to fail. Good Luck and stay warm!
