Fuel system
Check:
- Fuel pump pressure (38 - 44 psi).
- Valve clearance
- Ignition system.
Vr4 with miss and back fire under load
If this just started, maybe after a hard run, you may want to check your sparkplugs. I've melted the insulator on one of my plugs after a prolonged, spirited run causing same symptoms.

Have you replaced a fuel filter and cleaned your injectors lately. Maybe a little sea-foam in the fuel can clean out the lines. I would check fuel filter since they are cheap, first. Fuel pressure ok? Try not to chase the problem with money if you can resist. Determine if it is Fuel related or Electrical. These are those kind of problems that you locate down the road and find out it was something so simple you don't know how you missed it.

Should be on your 2nd timing belt. If you have the 4cyl engine there is a balance belt that needs to be changed also. Mitsubishi recomends replacement at every 60,000 miles, your 10k over. Most of the time these motors are not interferance engines, But I have seen a few that broke a belt at high rpm that did bent valves......
