I have a 1999 3.4l v-6 motor that keeps overheating. i read some where that it has a "overheat switch" if so where would it be?

A switch is not going to cause engine overheating. However, a low coolant level, bad thermostat, inoperative cooling fan,or bad head/intake gaskets will. Do not continue to drive the vehicle with this problem, or you run the risk of ruining the engine and doing expensive damage.

Is my thermastat bad if i am getting very little heat

Possibly...if stuck wide open, but not likely if engine is running a proper operating temperature. If engine is running a proper operating temperature, there is likely a problem in the AC/heater vent controls. Best of luck resolving your problem.

Transmission seems to go out completley. no gears

You need to put it on a computer and see what codes come up. It sounds like the transmission is fine and it may just be a component in it. Although, check the fluid and be sure it's red and doesn't smell like varnish. If so, you will probably want to change the fluid and the trainny may also have to be replaced. As always, start with the least expensive first.
