Set ignition timing on 1974
Assuming ( I know that is dangerous ) that everything is out of wack, I'll explain static timing.
First remove your top , cam / rocker cover.
Looking at the front crankshaft pulley, turn the engine over ( you can use a socket and ratchet on the pulley bolt , easier if all the plugs are out ) until the mark on the pulley lines up with the mark on the timing chain cover Known as TDC or Top Dead Centre, to double check, have a look down the spark plug hole on number one cylinder ( the front one ), the piston should be at the top.
Now looking at the valves for #1 cylinder, they will either be rocking ( changing from exhaust to inlet ) or , firing ( both closed )
Turn the engine till it is on TDC and the valves on #1 are closed ( firing)
It is now time to look at the distributor.
Remove the distributor cap, note where on the cap the lead to #1 spark plug is. On removal the rotor should be aligned with #1 plug.
It is very common to have the distributor 180 degrees out.
If the rotor is not where it should be , you have two options, move the plug leads till #1 lead is in the correct place , or remove and reset the distributor to the correct place.
Loosen the bolt holding the distributor from turning ( You will have already set the points gap , 20 thousands of an inch will work)
slowly rotate the distributor opposite the direction the rotor turns, until (with the ignition on ) you see a spark at the points. This is the point that the distributor is firing a spark to #1 cylinder which is at TDC on its compression stroke.
Reassemble the motor , plugs in, rocker cover on, plug leads connected, distributor cap on, distributor tightened up ( not too tight )
Kick it in the guts and it will start!
Now, using a timing light , shining on the front pulley and connected to #1 plug adjust for about 8 degrees of advance, this is an old engine and everything is probably worn so best running may not be what the book says, trial and error may be the way forward.
Don't forget to tighten the distributor once you have finished adjustments.
Good luck, Very cool car, there are a few racing here in New Zealand.
