A 96 is OBDII, you can not pull codes with out a code reader. Up until roughly 94 on some models it was possible to jump 2 pins on the diagnostic port. You need a compression test done on this. When you get excessive air from the oil cap, this is an indication that the rings on the pistons are worn out. A compression test will confirm this.
