Initial indicator is the battery light comes on at the dash. When mine went, I got about 2 days warning (with me resetting the computer every time I started the car) Then, driving in the dark, everything shut down (except headlights) wouldn't accellerate, or manual shift at all while driving at all.

Ok this could be many things without having any info on the car. Heres some questions you can break down. Firstly, does it have gas? can you hear the fuel pump "whirring" when you turn on the ignition? Have you checked ALL the fuses? and lastly more than likely, the computer may have had a glitch or something happened when you jump started your friends car etc, so the transponder in your key may not be contacting with your onboard computer. If the transponder in your key takes a battery, try changing it. good luck, hope this helps.
